"You're Mary Rycroft, and don't you forget it. You're going out into a dangerous world you've never even dreamed of before, and you must take care not to lose yourself."

Stubborn highborn Mary Rycroft is quite comfortable as the daughter of a prominent plantation owner in 1690's Jamaica. But then her younger brother rejects plantation living and his inheritance to run away and join a crew of pirates, whose goal alongside pillaging the selfish and greedy is to free captured slaves. Mary feels bound by love, loyalty, and a desire to prove her usefulness to her father to go after her brother and bring him home.

Her plan backfires when the navy ship she pursues him from is defeated by the pirates they hunted. The only way out is to travel aboard the pirate ship Vengeance while she attempts to convince her brother to come home, but the vastly different perspectives of the pirates and a budding romance with the ship's captain force Mary to reevaluate the world she is living in.

Unwilling to give up because she feels the life and early death of a pirate are not an acceptable fate for her brother, Mary must rise above her own ignorance and everything she's ever known to see the world and slavery though different eyes or risk losing the people she truly loves.
