Malory
"So she really did it," Katy states. "She really signed up for it."
It's around half seven at night and I'm just about done wiping a dining room table. Katy sits watching me.
"Yea," I say. "She had to anyway, being a senior drama student with all this compulsory school crap. Who knows if it'll work, though. Olivia is a great actress; I don't see why she wouldn't be able to get the part. It should be especially easy for her to take it off my hands. I hope the teachers and Mrs Bev let her have it. I'm keeping my hopes up right now. Hope is all I've got anymore."
The thing is that Katy doesn't go to school with Olivia and me. I just met her when I got the part time job here at Nadine's Restaurant. It was a coincidence for her to be just around my age. It's a relief we clicked from the start.
"But would it really be so bad if you got it?" She asks, cringing at her own question.
I pause to look at her in disbelief.
Seriously?
She's about to get the summary of the whole tale.
"Are you kidding me?" I exasperate. "We're talking about Kyle Davidson. The same Kyle Davidson who threw a slushie down my new, plain white top in year one. The same Kyle Davidson who tripped me while I was walking in my high heels and long mermaid dress that I'd saved up months of hard earnings for –I tripped over a giant bowl of punch! In front of everyone! Including my date back then... who I'd had to ask to the dance because he was shy. The same Kyle Davidson who told the class I was pregnant in year two and had teachers asking me if I really and truly didn't want counselling for my 'problem' quote-unquote. The same Kyle Davidson who made me look like an absolute idiot when we both went to the University Seminar last year with the rest of the selected few students chosen and handpicked to go from our school. He's made me look like a complete fool in front of total strangers all my high school life and I'll never forget it. And I know that he did most of it on purpose. He's a sadistic turd. I hate him. I've barely listed things he's done to me. It went from as small as a trip to as big as an embarrassment in front of a crowd of strangers. Imagine all the stuff in between. I don't want to bring them up anyway. It'll ruin my mood." I went back to wiping the table. "Right now I'm being hopeful."
"So if Olivia actually does get the part..." she begins, "you get to sit around and keep your grades up while Kyle has to end up doing the play anyway? I don't think that's fair, Malory. I don't think the teachers would have it that turn out that way. I'm not on his side, but I think if he's willing to pull the weight... you should too."
I scoff at the fact that she doesn't understand anything Kyle had put me through over the past four years –going into five! "What weight? He got himself into this. I may have thrown a wrong punch or two or seven in the past but this time wasn't my fault. He provoked me. He provokes me. In any case, Kate, I'm keeping my hopes up. If Olivia does get the part, I'll rejoice. If she doesn't, I'll find some other way to get out of it. And as for Kyle, I'm sure he's got some plan hidden up his sleeve. He's a disgusting pest with a cocky attitude but he's not stupid. He'll figure something out. Just like I've somewhat forced Olivia to attempt this, I'm sure he'll get one of his friends to do the same. His best mate Ron might pitch in. Ron's this guy in my theatre arts class, and he's Kyle's friend. For all I know he might be the one to take Kyle's part if Olivia gets through with hers. Hmm... Olivia and Ron as the leading co-stars... Well, they won't fight, and I'm thinking that Olivia would have told me if she hated him, so I think it'll turn out well in the end if it all works out. Fingers crossed."
