“Tell us, Michael. What happened that evening?”

The camera cuts to the image of a boy with sandy hair and big brown eyes. “My little brother and I were at the lake and I wanted to go for a swim. He warned me, but I didn’t listen. I started laughing at him for being so naïve, but next thing I knew, I was being dragged under by – something with claws. I didn’t see them until I woke up – I must’ve been unconscious. A girl – she woke me up, and then I saw the things!

“What did they look like?”

“Well, they had two really big eyes – completely black. And they each had long hair – and tails! They were evil mermaids, I swear!”

There was a boy on the news today. He said he was kidnapped by evil mermaids.

The wording was very laughable. But the woman who watches the tape over and over knows differently. She remembers her daughter, the one who vanished at sea just two years ago. There is no proof that ‘evil mermaids’ were what she was killed by. But the dreams that have plague her ever since are hard to ignore.

Her brother, he lost his nephew at the river, where they fished together daily.

The day the boy was on the news, the siblings clasped hands, eyes never once leaving the screen. And then they looked at one another, and all was peaceful.
