“Stay out of it, Josh. I don’t like her. She’s… I don’t know… too happy for me? Plus, she’s a woman… and I vowed that I won’t be dating any more women in my entire life… or any men. I don’t want anyone after what happened…” I said, looking down at the sidewalk.

“Hey,” Josh put his hand on my shoulder, “what happened in the past can stay in the past… You need to start learning how to trust people again. Not everyone you get into a relationship with is that… crazy. Look, I’m not saying that you have to date her, I’m just saying that it would be good to have at least one friend other than me who you can talk to and open up to.” Josh patted my shoulder a couple of times and then let his hand return to his side before slipping it into his pocket.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever… I doubt she’ll want anything to do with me after she sees what a killjoy I am. At least, that’s what normally happens with people who want to be my ‘Friends’,” I answered.

“Just give her a chance, okay?” he smiled, raising an eyebrow.

“Ugh, fine,” I answered, sticking my tongue out at him.

“I’ll see you when I see you,” he smiled, waving at me as he walked off down the sidewalk.

“Yep, sure will,” I shouted after him as I turned and started walking the opposite direction towards my apartment. Even though we were only chatting for a few minutes, it was already starting to get dark out. I kept my hands in my pockets and walked in silence until I reached my building.

“Evening Ana,” nodded the doorman, Fritz as he opened the door for me.

“Evening Fritz, how’s life treatin’ ya’?” I asked in reply, looking up from the ground at him.

“Better than ever, miss, just got the kids a couple of dogs,” he smiled.

“Has anyone tried to reach me today while I was gone?” I asked him, taking my hands out of my pockets.

“Yes, miss, the usual woman,” Fritz said, frowning slightly.

“And what did you tell her today?” I asked, worried that she had found out where my office was. “She” obviously was referring to my ex-girlfriend whom I haven’t seen for about four years, or spoken to, for that matter. She was always obsessed with me when we were dating and even when we broke up when I started my business she still didn’t let up. She was a stalker and no matter what I tried to do legally she always found a loophole or a way around it.

“I said you were out. I didn’t say a location,” answered Fritz faithfully.

“Thank you. You didn’t let her in or tell her about my apartment, right?” I asked, worried.

“No, miss, none of the sorts, as usual,” he nodded, smiling.
