"I have a job that I have to go to, no exceptions," I sighed as I walked though the kitchen to the door. I didn't want to leave Julie alone here, and I could tell she didn't want to be alone right now either, but I couldn't just quit my job.
She looked down and shook her head, following close behind me. "What if something happens?"
I pulled on my jacket, then reached for my keys. "Nothing will happen. There are magic seals and stuff. You can rummage around in the Chest, I'm sure it has things to entertain you. Just whatever you do, don't leave this apartment." I punctuated the last few words, making sure she heard them.
She crossed her arms and looked at me defiantly. "What if there's a fire? And what am I supposed to do for food?"
I rolled my eyes. "There won't be a fire and I'll bring lunch here, my god."
Sadness passed over her face when I reached for the door knob. I paused and looked at her again. "Julie, it'll be fine. I'll be here as soon as I can, okay? Now I have to go before I'm late."
Julie wiped the sadness off of her face and nodded. She locked the door after I exited.
At work, I tried to act normal, but I was jumpy and very twitchy. I kept looking over my shoulder, expecting to see Viktor right there, ready to kill me. The boss was slightly concerned, but I assured him I was perfectly fine. He didn't push it much more.
I was more concerned about Julie. I forgot to tell her not to try any magic. I don't think she would; she has no idea how to. And I don't think I had everything to set up the spell circle mages would need to cast a spell. But the fear nagged at me the entire morning until it was my lunch break. I grabbed the first thing the cook gave me and just left. When I got home, I didn't really feel any spell that was being done.
"Julie?" I called, setting the food on the table. I started to open it. The cook gave me pasta salad and a meat ball sub.
Julie came from my room with a spell book and sat down. "Food?" I nodded and pushed the meal for one over to her. She looked up at me,slightly confused. "Are you going to eat?"
I shook my head. "Nah, I ate there."
She shrugged and took a bite, then opened the book. "Are all these books in this weird language? I mean, I found the translator, but it's still confusing."
I sat across from her and nodded. "It's the language demons use. It is kind of confusing, but I'll teach you some when I can."
She ate while staring at the page. "Descuia Nectit?" she asked. "What-"
Her words were cut off by a loud boom. After the sound, a light, blinding and horrible, emitted from the walls. The light even seemed to be making a screaming noise that was like nails on chalk board. When the light died down, Julie looked at me with a terrified face.
"What the hell just happened?" she cried out.
I jumped up and started to gather important things. I've done this too many times in the last few years. Julie followed me to the Void Chest. I spoke to her as I scrambled, throwing things into the Chest. "You just unsealed the binds protecting my apartment."
"What? How!?" She started to help me put all my things in the Void Chest.
"Well, usually that's impossible," I explained. "The seals were put up by Grandmother, meaning they were pretty tough. You must be a Spell Castor."
She paused in her hurry to put the pile of books away. "A Spell Castor?"
I took the books from her and tossed them into the Chest and nodded. "A special kind of mage. You don't have to have incense or a spell circle to do things. You're as close as a human can come to being a demon, maybe even more powerful than a demon."
I picked up the Void Chest. Her eye widened when she saw it shrink down to the size of a wallet. I didn't think she expression could look more confused, scared, and shocked, but then we both heard the voice we never wanted to hear again.
The three words were called from outside, but I could hear the harsh amusement in them from where I stood. It sent a chill down my spine.
"I've found you."
