"What if."
"What if what, Oswald?" The tall, lean man turned to his shorter partner. They were both laying in bed, still and peaceful, until Oswald had said those two words. Oswald shook his head slowly and swallowed.
"What if I lost you. What if I lose, the only, thing I have. The only thing I love. What if I lose you like my mother and father, Ed?"
Oswald swallowed and sat up as a single wet, warm tear slid down his cheek. Edward quickly sat up to wipe the tear and opened his mouth to speak, but was quickly cut off by Oswald words that were broken by his now heavy sobs.
"Everyone I've loved has left me, and I know it wasn't their fault, but it happened. What if it happens again, Ed?"
"Oswald." Edward was pained to see his lover so distraught, but his voice had an edge to it, as if to let Oswald know that now is not a time to be panicked. But Oswald's cries became heavier and Edward pulled him closer, but Oswald was just inconsolable.
"Oswald, we cant worry about the future. Os, there is always going to be chance I'll die but you shouldn't worry about that. I'm here, and that's all that matters." Edward rubbed his back, but the tears did not stop.
"Just see this time you have with me as an opportunity to make it the best time of our lives. That's all you can do right now, Oswald. And I'm never going to leave you, not on my watch. I love you, Oswald. I always have and I always will. I promise." His voice was raspy and strained, his eyes wet and stinging. The sudden blow from the realization that they could very well lose each other forever hit him like a truck, and was twisting his emotions till his eyes couldn't hold them anymore. His strength faltered, and the tears fell. but his hold on the smaller man stayed firm.
Oswald looked up at Edward, he stopped sobbing when he saw Ed's tears. He wiped them, and then kissed him. It was a soft, light kiss. but it was so meaningful and pure.
Oswald loved Edward.
Edward loved Oswald.
And all was well.
