There's a moment in everyone's life where they meet someone who would completely change their future. For some people, it's the person they're going to marry, for others, it's their best friend.
I met mine while I was carrying two boxes into my new house.
As a girl who is 5'2 and 107 pounds, I should never have decided to carry two boxes that were larger than I was.
I felt myself starting to lose my grip on them, and they were sliding from my hands.
My heart was beating quickly until I felt the weight being lifted from my hands.
"Hi neighbor, I think you're a little too small to be carrying these boxes," a girl who looked about my age told me with a smile.
I frowned, "I was fine. I just lost my grip on them."
Her smile simply grew, "I know. I saw. I'm Allison Greenwood. My friends call me Ally. I'm your new neighbor."
She carried the boxes inside my new house and set them down on my living room floor.
"Thank you, I'm Julie Randall. My parents will be here eventually. I'm just starting to move boxes until they get home later tonight from their business meeting. I'm trying to get it done quickly, but I'm obviously not very good at this," I explained to her as I walked back outside to get more boxes.
She laughed, "I actually came out here to help you. You looked like you could use it. I could call my boyfriend and some of his friends to get their help too. It would make this process a lot faster, and you could meet some people from my school too. You are going to Lakewood High, right?
I nodded as I leaned against the moving van my parents rented for us.
I would appreciate the help, but I wasn't in the mood to meet a bunch of guys. Especially when I was sweaty and my house was a mess.
I wasn't ready for the rumors and mocking to start just yet.
"I appreciate your kindness, but I think I can handle this on my own. Thank you," I told her as I grabbed another box and took it inside.
She followed me with another box, "If you don't want anyone else to come, that's fine, but I still want to help you. I can't leave you alone with all of these boxes."
I smiled. It was unusual for someone to be so nice to me. Especially someone as pretty as she was and who wore Nike athletic clothes and put her hair up in a high ponytail with a scrunchie.
I wasn't really one for stereotypes, but Ally was beautiful. Generally girls like her were popular and avoided me completely.
"Thanks Ally," I told her happily.
We carried boxes inside for about two hours when I suggested going inside for lemonade.
I poured us both a glass, and I sat down at our new table.
"So Julie, where are you moving here from?" She asked me curiously.
I sighed, "San Diego."
She gasped, "No way! That's so awesome! I've never been outside of Kentucky!"
I shrugged, "It's not as glamorous there as it seems. The people can be pretty mean. I've lived in Miami, Atlanta, and San Diego, and that seems to be the common trend"
She laughed, "Well, unfortunately I think that's the trend everywhere. People can be jerks."
"Yeah, trust me. I know. Especially when you're the nerdy new kid," I told her honestly.
