|| To Keep You Safe
Jasper Hale stood in front of Anastasia Swan with his feet spread apart and his arms straight at his sides, a stance he familiarized himself with when he was a major during the civil war. His gold eyes were set on the small clan walking towards his family and the girl he had fell in love with, his gaze hard and suspicious.
There were three of them, their skin as pale as snow and their eyes a dark sinister burgundy. The first male to walk into the clearing fell back immediately, his blonde hair falling over his face as a gentle breeze swept through, allowing the other male to take the front, orienting himself around the tall, dark haired man in a manner that clearly displayed who led the pack. The third was a woman, her hair a startling shade of red that matched her eyes. Jasper could hear the light patting sound of their feet as they sped towards his family.
The three came to a stop. Jasper's eyes scanned them again now that they were closer, a mere ten feet away. He didn't care about their appearances though, now that he had memorized them, he only cared about their intentions.
The dark haired man, now wearing a smile on his lips, stepped towards Carlisle. "We thought we heard a game," he said, his voice holding the slightest hint of a French accent. Carlisle kept his gaze hard on him. The man didn't find this intimidating in the slightest as he kept his tone light, careless. "My name is Laurent, these two are James and Victoria," he informed, gesturing to the two vampires behind him.
Esme spoke, her eyes guarded but polite, nonetheless. "I'm Esme. This is my family, Emmett and Rosalie, Alice, Jasper and Anastasia, and my husband, Carlisle."
Jasper felt Ana's shock run through him at the mention of her name and he moved his hand so their fingers were interlaced together, calming her down so that the chances of the other clan hearing her heartbeat would lessen.
Laurent hummed, his blood colored eyes looking excited, like a child being told he could sit at the table with the adults. "Do you have room for a few more players?"
Carlisle took his question, answering him with a lie so believable Ana would have fell for it if she hadn't known him, "Actually, we were just finishing up. Perhaps, another time? Are you planning to stay in the area for long?"
"We're headed north, in fact, toward the Denali clan."
The atmosphere, Ana noticed, had slowly subsided into a casual conversation. She knew Jasper had played a part in it from using his peculiar gift to control the situation.
The blonde, James, moved forward a few inches, "What's your hunting range?" His voice was softer, but in some type of way, it was also the sound of a deadly whisper. Jasper tensed at the question, seeing the way his head had tilted, hearing something that was most likely the sound of Ana's heart beating. Jasper focused more on the vampire to make his hunger fade away, but he knew more than anyone that you could never take away the burning at the bottom of a vampire's throat.
