Once again they need my expertise. Why can't they just leave me alone? Oh right because if I don't help they'll do something unspeakable to me. What else can they do? They've already taken that what was most precious to me. They can no longer hurt me... so why do I still help them? I honestly don't know. Well I better- oomph. What the hell was that?
I look down and see a very small person. "Max. Get back here." I look up from the small- Max- and come face to face with Alec Lightwood.
"Sorry about him Y/N."
"It's fine. No harm was done." I give Alec a small smile.
"Why is your skin green?" "Max enough."
I kneel down to Max's height. "Well Max you see, every warlock as an 'abnormal' feature. Mines just so happens to be my skin color."
"Is your hair part of it too?" I let out a small chuckle. "No. I dyed my hair to give me an even more exotic look." "cool."
"Alright Max you should get back to studying with Izzy." says Alec before gently pushing Max in the right direction. He turns to me and tells me his mother is waiting for me.
He's a cute kid. In another world he could have been friends with my own. Sadly we don't always get what we want do we?
I knock on the door and hear a faint 'come in.' I go in and see Maryse sitting behind a desk, surprise surprise. "Hello Mayse." "Y/N." Always so welcoming.
"Why did you summon me here when Magnus Bane is at your beck and call?"
"The Clave has taken a special interest in you whi-"
"A special interest?! The only reason they have me on call is because they want to keep an eye on me and make sure I don't retaliate for the crimes they've done! Don't sugar coat it because we both know there's no need for such niceties between the Clave and I."
Maryse keeps a straight face during my rant. She looked a bit bothered when I interrupted but I really don't care.
Before she can speak I decide to reroute our conversation. "I saw your little boy on my way in. He ran right into me. What was his name? Max?"
"Stay away from Max." She says with a face that would scare off a demon but it only amuses me.
"Come now Maryse. We both know I wouldn't harm a child. Unlike your superiors." I smirk at her. "Anyway. Why is it that I'm here again?"
"We needed a warlock to strengthen our wards a-"
"Again you could have contacted the High Warlock of Brooklyn."
"Yes, we could have but you are the one who put up those runs so we say it fitting that you have a look at them." Is that the only look she has?
"Alright then let's get this over with shall we?"
We walk out of her office and had over to the training area first. Maryse leaves me to do what must be done. I use my magic to check which wards are weaker and work my way from there. I'm in the zone so I don't see or hear the person who crashes into me knocking us both down. The glow in my hands fades as soon as I lost my concentration.
"I'm sorr- oh. Hello Green Lady." I hear a cheery voice say. I open my eyes to see Max smiling down at me. "Hello Max." I say as I sit up.
"You know this is the second time you've run into me. Why is that?"
"Izzy was helping me with my runes but I got bored and escaped."
"Really? Now that I think of it, why aren't you in school?"
"I-uh- I started a fire in class." he looks down sheepishly.
"Let me guess, you wanted to roast some marshmallow?" I nudge him playfully. He looks up at me curiously before laughing. Eventually I laugh along with him.
"Max!" we hear a voice say behind us. We both turn and see Maryse looking condescendingly at us with her hands on her hips.
"Aren't you suppose to be studying with Isabelle? And you! You should be doing working on the wards?"
"Well I thought I'd give Max a little bonus studying."
"And what could you possibly teach my son?" She says with a look of outrage.
"Well I could teach him about history, warlocks or I don't know, people who've gone rogue?" Maryse looks like she's about to burst. And she does.
"YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO EDUCATE MY SON! YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BE ANYWHERE NEAR HIM! MAX! Go find your father. You're leaving for Idris today."
"Oh don't take it out on the kid. He hasn't done anything that requires such extremities. Besides I'm done here anyway so I'll leave." I turn to Max and give him a necklace with a light blue stone coated in silver. "This used to belong to a very caring and strong young boy. I have no use for it but I think he would want you to have it. And if you ever have need for me or wish to see me again just say my name while holding the pendant. Okay?" "Okay" "You'll grow to be a great man some day. Take care Max. I'll see you around."
"Come on Max." Max hugs me before he goes to his mother. "You're a cool warlock Y/N. I'll see you again." I smile as I hug him. We part and I kiss his forehead, leaving behind a protection spell. I leave the institute after getting my payment.
He'll grow up to be a strong and rational shadowhunter. You would've like him James. You too could have been friends had those men not taken you from me. I should've been home with you. They were there to collect me. Leaving you will be my greatest mistake but taking you from me will be the Clave's greatest mistake. They will pay for what they've done.
