Medieval Europe – 1348
The ride to the Sunday market took longer than Harry expected. An obstacle at the river bridge across from the main castle, a cart carrying goods fell and it made a mess all over the narrow stone bridge. Harry had to order the carriage to go another route. The had to walk further down the stream to another bridge which connected them to the village.
Harry peeped through the cotton curtains of his fabulously decorated carriage. People starring at his vehicle from outside. Amazed.
Typical.
The town people aren't used to seeing noblemen carriages in the town. Hardly any nobleman ever step foot in town. They would normally send their slaves and messengers to get what they want to be done. A nobleman in a quaint town like this will cause more than a few gossip.
Harry looked at the muddied faces of the common folk, the boring drab clothes they wear, always a torn somewhere and then patched up again. They wore simple clothes made for living and labor. A far cry from his garish clothes. The fantastic silk, delicate ruffles. His everyday clothes could probably be pay a family's expenses for a month.
A knock from front window snapped Harry from his thoughts.
"Sir, we are here."
"Thank you."
Harry gave a final peek. Giving a final mental conversation with himself before he step onto the dirt floor outside.
Breathe Harry. Breathe. This is just like going to the palace.
All he could think of is his mum, probably pulling her hair out if she knew he was in the town right now.
The carriage door opened and Harry was met with a powerful sunlight hovering above him. He blinked as he was met by stares by the towns people. They probably never seen a nobleman up close in their lives. Harry gave a soft wave. His two guards pointing their trusted swords up in the air as a warning.
"What is that smell?" said Harry, covering his mouth and nose with his sleeve.
It smelled of rotten sewage and rotting fruits. Harry never smelled anything more horrible in his life. He could almost puke.
"Sir, we can turn around if you like," said one of his guards.
"No. No. We've finally made it. There's no point turning back now."
Harry inhaled and convinced himself once more.
