"Dodger...Are you sure this is a good idea?" Cain asked me skeptically. "I mean, what if your parents found out?" He asked nervously. His paws shifted anxiously. Man, this guy is a nervous wreck.
"Pssh, we'll be fine! Now go hide Cain, we're supposed to be having fun," I watched as he nodded and quickly scampered off. "It's not like my parents have enough time to notice me anyways..." I muttered to myself bitterly.
Quickly I shook off the flash of anger and grinned. I closed my eyes and began counting. "One, two, three..." I paused. For a second I thought I heard footsteps, but it must've been Cain. I continued. "Four, five..." More footsteps, more anxiety. They stopped, so I continued once more. "Six, seven, eight, nine-" My eyes opened and I found myself staring into the eyes of a hunter. Quickly I turned and saw my friend's tail poking out from behind a tree. "RUN!" I screamed.
Everything seemed like it was in slow motion. First, the shot. It was oddly quiet, like the rest of the forest stopped to watch me die. I hardly felt any pain. The world spun and I think I felt myself falling. It was so slow though. As my head hit the ground the last thing I saw was Cain running as fast as he could back to the pack, and even that seemed to be under time's control.
Why would the Sitora's want me, a pup, to die? That was my final thought as my eyes closed for what I thought would be the final time.
