Chapter One: Before the Bell
Aria glanced at her watch. Sweet, fifteen minutes before the bell! Seeing as she was late to her first period class more times than she could count, this was an accomplishment for her. Grabbing her books out of her locker, Aria made her way down the hall to class number one for the day, English.
Pulling open the door, Aria immediately noticed the room was empty, save for Ryan, a classmate of hers. He was sitting on top of his desk, reading a book, mostly oblivious to Aria's appearance. It was only when she greeted him did he look up from his book, close it, and acknowledge her.
"Hey, Ryan!" Aria smiled.
"Oh, hey Aria." He answered. Aria moved to put her books down on her desk, then turned to face the dark-haired boy. Hopping up on the desk in front of him, she leaned forward so she could see the title of the book Ryan was holding.
"So... Whatcha reading?"
"Nothing."
"Well, you have to be reading something. You do have a book in your hands and all."
Ryan responded by bopping Aria on the head with the item in question.
"Hey!"
"Sorry, Ari." He grinned.
"First of all, you aren't sorry. Second of all, don't call me Ari!"
"You know that rhymed, right?"
"Oh. I guess it did, but that isn't the point!"
After bickering for a bit more, they fell into a comfortable silence. Aria wasn't sure what her and Ryan's relationship was, but she enjoyed his company, even if he did love teasing her to no end. Aria slid off the desk and made her way to the back of the room, where the books were kept.
"Choosing books over me?" She heard from behind her.
"Says the guy who was so engrossed in his reading." She shot back over her shoulder.
Ryan laughed. "Touché." Aria noticed a brief glint in his eye.
Something like determination?
Shrugging it off, Aria kneeled, skimming the shelves for a certain work, a dystopian novel where death is controlled by humans, a rather interesting read if she did say so herself. Locating the book, she slid it out of the shelf and stood, only to find that Ryan had moved to face her, only a few feet away.
Aria shot a questioning glance towards the boy. "Everything okay?" She asked.
"C-can I see your book?" Came the sudden reply.
"Sure...?" She hesitated.
Ryan closed the distance between them.
Aria gave him the novel, still with an inquiring look. "Well that was weird." She muttered to herself.
After a minute or two of inspecting the book, Ryan finally looked up.
"It sounds good," He admitted. "Can I read it after you?"
"Oh, of course! No problem, I mean, I haven't read it before, but I'll let you know how it goes!" Aria beamed.
Ryan grinned back, looking a bit strange, Aria noticed.
Moving to give the book back, Ryan stepped forward a bit.
Of course, on instinct, she backed up, hitting the bookshelf. Brown eyes met pitch black ones, and Aria was startled to see the intensity of the gaze Ryan was giving her. Realizing the compromising position they were in, Aria's cheeks flushed.
All she could manage to get out: "R-Ryan, what-"
Ryan didn't respond.
Aria gripped the wood of the shelf, not breaking eye contact. She was so close that she could count every eyelash Ryan possessed if she really wanted to. But obviously, there was no time for that, because Aria's train of thought immediately crashed.
Ryan was so close he was almost kissing her.
Before that thought could even register, Ryan's hand was on the bookshelf, gaze locked on her's.
"Screw it." He breathed.
And then his lips were on hers.
So Aria did the most rational thing she could think of.
Which is freak out internally of course.
Aria didn't have to suffer for long, because of a "WHAT THE-" from the door immediately broke Ryan from the kiss. Aria immediately slapped a hand over her mouth, eyes darting from Ryan to the three newcomers.
Ray, a fellow classmate of Aria and Ryan, and the perpetrator of the previous outburst was standing by the door, shock clearly written across his face. Behind him, Samantha and Sarah, also fellow classmates, had similar expressions across their faces as well.
Ryan broke the silence. "This isn't what it looks like...?"
Samantha had seemed to have snapped out of it, based on her reply: "Actually, it really does."
Aria, watching this exchange with cheeks burning and a hand still over her mouth, was still trying to comprehend what had just happened.
So, again, Aria did the most rational thing she could think of.
Which was to immediately flee out the door.
Ryan could only watch, and think to himself that what he had done clearly had not been the best course of action. Once again, impulse had won over logic.
Aria, I'm so sorry...

Okay! Well wasn't that something. Right, before I continue, hello everyone! I'm Holly, and I hope you liked the first chapter of ADLFK. I'm still pretty new to this, so criticism is much appreciated.
Now that that's all out of the way, what did you think? Share, leave a comment, and Vote!
Also, I sneaked a book reference in with the book Aria was talking about. Try and guess what book she was talking about!
EDIT: So I've decided to change some of the story, albiet not a lot, just for clarity, and for events to flow smoother together.
