There's this boy..wait...not a boy but a guy. He seems to be hanging around a lot. I sometimes catch him glancing over here where me and my little sister work while my mother takes care of the register and my dad stays in the back, working on baked goods to come out to the front for customers. Whenever that dude looks over here from his seat, I kind of just give him a weird look with an eyebrow up and he looks away.
"Hey, Allen." My little sister, Anna, nudged me with a weird smile. "Someone's looking over here."
"Stop it, will you!" I whispered harshly at her as I decorated a cupcake for people to watch. Decorating in front of customers was like an advertisment and gets their interest, especially children, who loves watching us decorate with spinkles and candy-shaped figures. Anna's specialty was candy figures. Mama specials in wedding cakes; Papa specials in bread like donuts or just bread; and my specialty was chocolate. I love chocolate, especially chocolate fondue.
"Red Velvet cupcakes!" Papa shouts from the back as he places the fresh baked cupcakes by the window where we pick up to set to cool and then decorate. The children that came with their family came rushing to the glass display counters to smell the red velvet cupcakes. They smelled delicious! And every kid looked like they wanted to devour one because their eyes were wide like cookies.
"Croissants!" Papa shouted as he placed the hot pan by the window.
Many of the older people, like our regular customer, Mr, Herring, raised their hand for an order. Papa's croissants was one of the best selling sweets in our cafe/bakery and it sold out immediately, especially Fridays and weekends.
"Um, excuse me."
I looked up from the red velvet cupcake that I had started decorating and saw no one. Then the door bell rang as a customer left.
"Thank you! Come again!" Anna shouted at the top of her lungs, while waving to the back of the customer. Meanwhile, I looked around confusingly, like someone had tried to get my attention.
"What are you looking for, Mr. Allen?" Tipsy, a cute little girl with pink overalls and her hair tied to two ponytails, asked from below the display counter. I chuckled as I looked pass the glass counter to where her tiny self was lodged onto the display window.
"Nothing, Tipsy."
"That cuppycakie looks good." Her eyes wide like cookies as she looked at the pink frosted velvet cupcake. I laughed and finished it with colored star sprinkles and handed it to her. Tipsy gasped, her eyes bigger than the cupcake itself.
"Really? Cuppycakie for me? Won't you get in trouble?" Her troubled eyes darted to Mama, then back at me. I brought a finger to my mouth and told her,
"Shh, it's a secret between you and me, okay?" I winked at her. Tipsy mimicked me with her finger and nodded, a happy twinkle in her eyes as she ran back to her mother with the cake.
"You know that's coming out of your pay, right?" I stiffened at the voice and turned to Mama.
"Y-yes?" The elders in the shop laughed as Mama playfully smacked me by the arm. Anna just tsked as Papa smiled from the back with hands on his hips.
The next morning, I woke up early to help Papa with the dough before heading out to school. Mama was already in the kitchen, making breakfast, popping a few samples in Papa's mouth before they smiled lovingly to each other.
"Here." Mama handed me my plate of egg and sausage. "Hurry before you're late."
I dived into my breakfast while standing, careful not to get any flour in my food. After breakfast, I ran upstairs to my room to change, grab my bag, and leave.
