Cherub opened her eyes halfway, feeling something nudge her side. She was laying on a stiff cot, of which was covered with a thin sheet. She felt something nudge her again, and opened her eyes all the way. Cherub turned her head, which felt as if it were buzzing a bit, and saw Alex standing by the cot. With a mild but lingering soreness, Cherub sat up, holding her head in her right hand.
"What in the worlds did they do to you?" Alex asked unsympathetically. "Electrocution in some... some manner or another," Cherub replied in a tired voice. "And I appreciate the concern." She looked up, and noticed that the space they were in was enclosed with barriers of steel bars. The floor beneath her feet was solid concrete; they were in a jail cell.
"I hate to break this to you," Alex began, "but it appears that we've been brought to a dungeon." Cherub's eyebrows lowered, and she looked up at the rym and asked quickly, "What do you mean by that?"
"Judging by the heightened security, I would say that we've been imprisoned in a dungeon." The rym glanced around the cell, "Although, it's much cleaner than I would've imagined-" "It's called a jail cell," Cherub stated, walking towards the bars. "And if we're in a jail cell, then we've been arrested- Dang it!" she exclaimed after her statement, kicking the bases of a couple of the bars with her foot.
"Hey, keep it down in there!" A male voice shouted from outside the door, which was on the opposite side of the room. "You keep it down!" Alex shouted back.
Not but a few seconds later, the door opened, and a man walked in holding a clipboard and a dark green pencil. He walked towards their cell, then came to a stop in front of its door. The man was older, somewhere in his fifties, perhaps, wearing black pants, a white button-up shirt and a green tie. He stood there for a moment, looking over the papers on the clipboard, and tapping the pencil on the edge. Alex and Cherub stood there as he remained silent, and gave each other a glance.
"Do you know why you've been arrested?" The man asked, looking up from his papers. "We have a pretty good idea," Cherub replied. "We do?" Alex questioned in a whisper. "Yes," Cherub whispered back.
"Then I hope you can understand the severity of these charges," he said. "Trespassing... assault..." the man began listing off from the paper. "C'mon, does one small punch in the face fairly fit under the title 'assault'?" Cherub said. The man glanced back up at her. "... resisting arrest- tell me, this is something I don't quite understand; we found you in the city records, yet they date back to only about three years ago, and no record of a former state residence."
Cherub's expression remained unchanged. "So?" "'So', what? Did you fall out of the sky? Did you, um, live in the woods for your whole life?" "And if she did, what problem would there be?" Alex asked in a hostile voice," he turned his head towards her, "you baffle me even more. We tried to find your records, but there were none. Except-" he paused to pull one of the papers out of the clip. He held up a sketch of a face. The person had long hair that ended at different lengths, a pointed chin, and grey marks under her eyes; it was a sketch of Alex. "This is a facial sketch, drawn based on the recollection of an eyewitness of the robbery that took place yesterday just before noon at the First Bank of Lucas. Sound familiar?"
Alex stared, almost dumbfounded at the sketch, and tried to answer him. "I... Uh," she muttered. However, before she was able to speak, the door at the other side of the room opened, and a younger man stood there, and peered in. "Mr. Severence? Sir?" he said meekly.
"What?" he turned his head towards the younger man, "I thought I told you I was busy-" "It's her, sir," he interrupted him. "We found Evagyne."
Severence's eyes widened. He turned his head back towards Alex and Cherub as he walked towards the door, and said, "I'll be back," before he exited the room.
