The rest of his first night in the huge city was a blur after she left. He fed, and drank, and fed some more before making his way to a high-end hotel and passing out in the penthouse.

Elijah went back to the dive for the next two nights, only he didn't see the young woman there again. It was as if she had disappeared off the face of the earth. Until the fourth night.

There she was, sitting at the bar with a glass of clear liquid in front of her which was either water or alcohol, and judging by the smell it wasn't water. She laughed at something the bartender said and took another sip of her drink as Elijah sat down next to her.

"Can I help you?" She raised an eyebrow and smirked against the glass raised to her lips as she repeated the words he had first spoken to her several nights ago.

"Just here for a drink." He turned to the bartender. "Your finest scotch."

"No you're not," she rolled her forest green eyes. "This is one of the shittiest bars in the entire city – no offence, Jack. I'm Victoria, by the way. No one calls me that, though. Call me Tori."

"None taken," the bartender replied as he placed Elijah's drink in front of him.

"So why're you really here?" Tori rested her chin on her palm of her hand.

"Elijah," he introduced himself before he downed the entire contents of his glass in one large gulp. "And like I said, I'm here for a drink."

"Well then what brings you to New York?"

"Why are you so interested all of a sudden?" His dark eyes stared back into hers. "A few nights ago you wouldn't have given me the time of day."

"I've had a bit to drink," she whispered loudly, her words ever so slightly slurred.

"I'm here on vacation," Elijah spoke nonchalantly.

"No you're not." Her soft curls bounced as she shook her head lightly. "You go to LA for a vacation, but not New York."

"Then why do people come here?"

"There are two types of people that come to this city; the ones trying to escape the people they used to be, and the ones trying to discover themselves." Tori's black fingernails drummed against the counter absentmindedly. "I know why I'm here. The question is: do you?"

Up until this moment Elijah had thought that Victoria was a shallow Barbie doll. And then she posed the question that made him think.

Why had he come here? Of all the cities in the world, why New York?

Victoria stood up abruptly, placing a $50 bill on the counter and began to walk towards the exit before turning back to Elijah.

"Come on," she nodded towards the door, "don't you wanna find out?"
