Sidestory – Chapter 4

Hyerin leaned over the railings with the fishing rod on both of her hands. She went fishing with Kai in the middle of the sea on the second day of their Busan trip. Kai was just on the side, watching her, and it made her feel uneasy so she tried to say something. “Fishing is kind of fun. Don’t you think?”

“It’s kind of boring. I don’t know why you’re so eager of trying something only old men could endure.” Kai replied.

“Well, waiting.. anticipating for something is interesting, too. It’s some kind of rush.”

“Waiting, huh?” Kai copied her leaning over the rails. “Maybe. But if you know already that what you’re waiting for is never coming to you, but you keep on holding on, it’s painful.” Like waiting for you. Crap, why was he being such an emo right now?

Hyerin gulped down. She knew Kai wasn’t talking about fishing anymore. She really felt guilty for dragging him around again. Just some days ago, he confessed his feelings but she rejected it indirectly. She knew that Kai was trying to avoid her but she doesn’t want their friendship to end so she acts like nothing happened. Since when have she been this cruel?

“Look, Kai, I want to say –“

“The other boat’s getting pretty close to us, don’t you think?” He cut her off abruptly.

“Huh?” She looked over to the left far side of the sea and saw another boat that was really close on their trail. “Are they following us? Who’s on that boat anyway?”

“Beats me.” He shrugged but he knew just exactly who were there. You just don’t give up, do you, Luhan hyung?

She had no interest whatsoever on who was on that other boat. So she turned to Kai again to continue what she was supposed to say earlier. But she got surprised when he was already so close in front of her. She sucked in her breath when she met Kai’s intense gaze. He trapped her by placing his hands on the railing on either side of her.

“K-Kai?”

“I know that you just pretended that you didn’t realize I was confessing to you on the summer fair, Hyerin. And I know that you were rejecting me indirectly. But you keep on acting like it never happened and it hurts me, you know?” His voice was soft but she could see the pain clearly on his eyes.

“Kai, I’m s –“

“Please don’t say you’re sorry.” He placed his hands on top of hers. “Is there really no chance, Hyerin? Do you think that you could never feel the same way I do?”

She averted her eyes away. Kai asking these things with such a gentle voice and his close proximity was too much for her heart to take. She knew she was still into Luhan but Kai was a very special person to her, too. And with her bodily functions reacting like this (Her fast heartbeat, for example), she knew there was a chance for Kai. But she didn’t want to make him wait for something she wasn’t sure of. “I don’t know, Kai. Even after all these years, you know that I still can’t.. forget about him.”
