“Oliver, you are excused.” Both the man sitting across from me and I snap our heads to the door, where we see the man from before standing with his arms crossed and his feet braced a shoulder’s width apart. One thing’s for sure, he’s definitely an imposing figure.
“What happened to my brother?” I ask, jumping up.
“He’s being dealt with.” He says, stepping forward.
“What do you mean ‘he’s being dealt with’? What does that mean? Please don’t hurt him!” I beg, terrified for Jamie.
Instead of answering, his large hand cups my cheek as he stares at me. I try pulling back, but part of me doesn’t want to. His hand feels so right against my skin. “I’ve been waiting a long time for you.” He tells me softly.
“I don’t understand any of this.” I whimper before I can stop myself. I’m terrified yet I desperately want to throw my arms around this man.
He looks confused for a minute, “What do you mean you don’t understand?”
“Everything?” I offer, stepping back to pace. “This morning, I had normal parents and a normal brother. We were coming here to congratulate somebody on their promotion and then we were heading back home. Now I don’t even know what’s real or fake anymore. I mean, werewolves?” I pause, throwing him an accusatory glare, “And you called me your mate earlier. I am not your mate.”
“Of course you are - can’t you feel it?” He asks, stepping toward me again. This time I step back at the same time so he can’t gain any leverage.
“Do not step away from me.” He demands, almost growling.
My eyes widen in fear as my body freezes. He curses softly under his breath, “You don’t need to be afraid of me.” He says sharply.
“I-I don’t?” I ask, sounding doubtful even to my own ears. I wonder if that was okay to say.
He sighs and sits down on the coffee table, pulling me so I sit in front of him on the chair I was on before. “No, you don’t. Not ever.”
“But what if you turn into a wolf? There’s nobody here to protect me.” I say nervously. Never in my life have I felt like such a child. Normally I can fend for myself, but right now I just want a knight in shining armor to come save me.
“You don’t need protection from me! I would never hurt you.” He growls, obviously angered by what I suggested.
“But what if you do?” I ask.
“I won’t. I can’t. It’s impossible for me to hurt you. The only thing I want is to see you smile.” He tells me, smiling softly at the end.
“Why?” I whisper.
“Because you’re my mate.” He makes it sound so absolute, like there isn’t even a shred of doubt in his mind that we were born for each other.
“You keep on saying that like it should make a huge difference to me. Why does it matter?” I ask, frustrated.
He remains silent for a minute until he finally lets out a deep breath, “Why don’t you tell me everything you know about Were’s and I’ll fill in the rest.” He suggests.
“Does Twilight count?” I ask, only partially joking.
His eyes widen, “You’re telling me that you literally don’t know anything about us?”
“It kind of depends on how you look at it. I love reading about them - you, but I never actually took any of it seriously. They weren’t real until what I saw downstairs.” I tell him.
