Sherlock and John had just left the jazz cafe that Sherlock had brought John to. John had walked off after they said goodbye. The sun was just beginning to set. The sky was almost purple. Sherlock watched John as he walked away.
Sherlock strolled across the street to a peer. He almost seemed to be waltzing to that imaginary tune he couldn't get out of his head. Just a few notes playing over and over again. But it was beautiful. Leaning on the edge of the peer, he whistled the tune out loud. Still beautiful out loud. A couple was on the peer, enjoying the view. Sherlock glanced at them and smiled to himself. He spotted a black fedora by his feet and picked it up. He placed it on his head but did not take his hand off. When he noticed the man in the couple he saw was looking at him, he lowered his hand and held out the fedora to that man. The man took it and placed it on his own head.
'City of stars,' Sherlock sang quietly, 'are you shining just for me?' He smiled as he approached the woman in the couple and offered to dance. 'City of stars, there's so much that I can't see.' The woman gladly accepted, but they were rudely interrupted by her husband—the man with the fedora. Sherlock kept his soft smile and turned to look at the sky once again.
'Who knew,' he continued. 'Is this the start of something wonderful, or one more dream that I cannot make true?' Sherlock's smile started to disappear when he realised it. He was in love. What did that mean? Is it going to be something wonderful? Like in the movies and fairytales? Or would it just break his heart?
Sherlock began whistling the tune in his head again, walking on the peer while the sun sank below the horizon. One more dream that won't come true.
