I sat at my desk doodling on the corner of my page. I kept glancing at the clock from time to time waiting for the bell to ring. Next class was band. I rolled my eyes at the teachers lecture and go back to doodling. I was never one for listing to people or doing as I'm told. So it wasn't a surprise when my math teacher called me to her desk at the end of class.
"Alea. You wen't paying attention were you?" She asked raising an eyebrow. Her voice held a cold resentment for me. I don't blame her. I try to make her and everyone else's life hell. I look back at Kaylee as she ushered for me to follow her. I shake my head an nod towards the teacher. She frowns and leaves the classroom. I'm alone. I look back to the teacher as she hands me a pink slip.
"Detention until you get your homework done and start to listen." She said turning back to her computer. I rolled my eyes and turned around. A smile crossed my face as a though came to my head.
"Maybe you should go back to teaching in this hellhole and stop ruining my life." I whisper just loud enough for her to hear. It wasn't my best comeback but it had to do. The teacher turned back to me and scoffed. "Excuse me. What was that?" She asked.
I turn back a smile on my face. "I said go back to teaching in this Hellhole and stop ruining my life." I say louder. She opens her mouth in anger then closes it.
"Double detention and an SIR. You had better go down to Mr. Hilding's office now." She said once more before turning away. I laugh and walk away. Outside of the classroom I meet up with everyone else. Kaylee stood next to Grace and Gage as they waited for me to leave the room. I look at them and smile.
"Detention again and I have to go to Mr. Hilding's office. Anyways, fuck that, wanna go?" I ask. They smile and walk down the hall. Gage and Kaylee take the lead and I fall back with Grace. I turn my head an smile at her.
"So you got in trouble again?" She asked me. I look away and nod. "I heard you also got in trouble?" I ask. Knowing Grace it was either homework or mouthing off that got her in trouble. I've come to face the fact. Some people just have a talent for pissing other people off. Me and Grace definitely did. We walked down the steps to the bottom floor. making sure no teachers were watching we made out usual way to the back of the school. We found a secret room awhile ago. When we were wandering around. We opened the door that was under the stairs. Maybe it was an old janitors room or something. It doesn't matter to us anyways. There's a little hatch in the floor in one of the corners. One day one of us opened it and found the best thing ever. A ladder leading down too five large rooms. Almost taking the entire under the school. Gage, Kaylee, Grace, and me climbed down the ladder to the bottom. The first room was set up as a living room. Large lights made it very bright. The walls were painted a bright orange. We never really asked how this place got here or who made it. We were just happy for an escape from school. Gage jumped on one of the couches with white pillows. There are two orange chairs and one longs orange couch with white pillows. A white fluffy carpet laid on the floor. on top was a wood and glass coffee table. A flat-screened T.V. sat on a wood stand in front of a wall. Gage grabbed the remote from the table and switched the channels. He stopped at one and started watching. Kaylee walked into another room. I followed with Grace behind me. The kitchen had white tile with black diamonds between the squares. The counters tops were made of white marble. the cupboards were oak wood and glass. The sink sat next to a stove. On one side a sliver fridge with two doors. One was the freezer and one was the fridge. An ice and water dispenser hung from the freezer side. A small oak table with four matching chairs were placed on the other side of the room. The walls were painted a light green color with black trimming. The fridge was stocked full of food-both left here and some we bought- and the cupboard had dishes in them from whoever lived her before. Kaylee grabbed some water from the fridge and tossed me and Grace one. She took two to the living room and gave one to Gage before sitting down on the couch. I grab Graces hand and lead her into on of the other rooms. besides the kitchen and living room there were three more. A large bathroom with pluming, a bedroom- which we were in- and another random room. I sat on the large kingsized bed and looked at Grace. She sat down beside me and meet my eyes with her worried one's.
"Grace. I'm leaving. I can't stand it at home. I don't want anyone else to know. Just you." I say quickly. My mother had been a pain scenic I told her about me. Now she would spend hours without asking me if i needed food or anything. She'd yell and yell until she was to tired to yell anymore. Lately I've been getting sick of it. Grace looked at me and frowned.
"No. You can't leave. Where would you go? I don't want you to leave us." She said trying her best to change my mind. My mind was made up. I was running away. Finally. Grace stopped talking knowing I had made up my mind. She stood up and shook her head. She turned around and walked out of the room. I was left alone. I had everything ready. I wasn't going home today. I was running after school. Never turning back. Where I'd go? I had no clue. the adventure was what I wanted most. After awhile I got up and left the room to. Sitting in a chair I looked at Gage, Kaylee, and Grace. They sat together watching whatever was on T.V. Grace didn't meet my eyes. I sighed and turned my attention back to the T.V. I watched it for awhile until a large ringing filled the room. Gage took out his phone and shut off the alarm.
"Time to go back already?" He sighed. Everyone got up and walked to the ladder. Grace was the first to leave. She walked up without a second glance. Gage looked back to me, confused. "What's up with you two?" He asked. I shrugged. I knew Grace would keep my secret until I left. No matter how good of a friend Gage and Kaylee I didn't want anyone else to know. So I lied. Shrugging I followed him up. He didn't ask again but followed Kaylee and Grace out the door. Two more classes. Two more classes until I'm finally free.
