                                                Chapter 1

“Darkness…. Complete darkness…. It engulfs everything in its path and halts for no one. Or so it seems…”

“Excuse me sir,” the boy asked. “Yes,” Came a ragged reply. “I need directions to a very special place and was wondering if you knew where I need to go.” The man paused. “Tell me why the dove flutters….” The boy smiled. “As a warning to all who hear,” said the boy.

The old man pointed, “Just beyond the corner store that way, and into the building that sells furniture. Then ask the clerk for a dove’s feather.” The boy turned to leave,”thank you si-“A group of men in white suits walked down the sidewalk on the other side of the street. The old man tugged on the boys arm and gestured to leave.

Too late! Then men had spotted them and knew who they were! “Run!” the old man yelled, and the boy did so. The old man drew forth a staff and proceeded to fend off the group of six men. Then men drew their own weapons, two with swords, one with a staff, one with a dagger, and two with bows and arrows.

The old man was brave, but would never be able to fight them all off alone. The boy was compelled to act. He rushed forth, bare-handed, and leapt into the fray. A strong blow to the knee made the man with the dagger fall, and a swift kick to the head knocked him out cold. The swordsmen followed quickly behind and covered the man with the staff, who was falling behind with the man who had the dagger over his shoulder. The swordsmen advanced very swiftly.

“Didn’t I tell you to run?!” said the man. “Yeah, but I’m not the type to leave. Especially not an elder like you, sir.” The old man looked annoyed. “Look new blood, it isn’t that easy to take me down without a fight when I’m actually trying.” I dodged a blow from one of the swordsmen. He was quick. He could easily wear me down by the looks of it. I can’t win if I just let him swing, he has too much endurance.

Another blow to the knee, and yet another easy dodge. He certainly has some type of training. I wonder who is teaching these men to fight with such ease with weapons such as theirs. The swordsman swung high at my shoulder, but I dodged it by a hair. I saw an opening in his stance after he swung so I threw a hard punch. Then an arrow panged against my wrist and my gauntlet underneath my long sleeve, which made my fist fly in front of his chest just under the arm. He brought his elbow bearing down on my shoulder. SNAP!

Searing pain rushed through my arm and the right side of my chest. I dropped instantly and gasped at the pain. An arrow hit the sidewalk beside my head and the swordsman was standing over me. I heard a loud battle cry in the direction of the old man. An arrow struck my thigh and the swordsman was bringing his sword bearing down on me. There was a gust of wind and the swordsman was thrown out of sight.

A strong hand grasped my color and pulled me up over a shoulder. “So it’s come to recklessly attacking us in the streets, huh? Well, we aren’t that easily overpowered. We travel in flights.” Said a strange voice. The bowmen drew arrows but they were burned while they were being strung. The voice laughed deep and rich. The bowmen turned and fled as well as the remaining men.

I was put down against a wall, and saw the man for the first time. He couldn’t have been more than seven-teen. He had pure white hair that came to his shoulders and a clean shaven face. He bent down and held out his hand to the old man. “Elda,” he whispered. The old man gratefully accepted his hand, and allowed himself to get pulled up. Then he swiftly bowed to the young man.

“Now now, Elda, you know I don’t like that from my elders.” I approached him cautiously. He turned to look at me and sniffed the air. “I don’t recognize your scent.” He turned to the old man, “New-blood?” the man nodded. He looked me over. “At least he held his own. I will guide him to the sanctuary. You should come and get medical attention, Elda.

The old man made a grunt of disgust. “I’m tougher than that young one. You know that.” The young man laughed again. “Yes but even you can feel pain. Come now.” He turned and walked past me to the corner. “Coming?”
