Chapter 3 – Awkward moments

(Sasami’s P.O.V)

“What are you guys doing here!” I almost screamed, yanking my hands off of the piano as if it burned. Playing the piano was something I only did in private, and I didn’t want anyone to listen to me or judge me for how I played.

“They followed you,” Haruhi said, leaning around Tamaki. “Everyone was a bit concerned when you just ran off like that, so Tamaki-senpai decided to follow you to make sure you were alright.”

“That doesn’t explain why you were spying on me!” I yelled. I was more embarrassed than I could ever remember being. “What I do in my free time is none of your business, Senpai!”

I looked at Sasami in surprise, wondering why her cheeks were flushed and why she looked like she was about to cry.

“What I do in my free time is none of your business, Senpai!” she yelled at me. I took a step back in surprise. Was Sasami … mad at me?!

To everyone’s surprise, Sasami grabbed her bag and whacked me in the head with it.

I suppose I should have felt bad about hitting Tamaki-senpai like that, but it seemed fair to me. “Don’t spy on me,” I said, leaning in and glaring at him. “What if I had been doing something illegal, huh? You would be a witness and I would have to kill you, now wouldn’t I?”

“I-I’m sorry,” he stammered, looking startled. “I just wanted to make sure you were alright.”

By now, I was over my embarrassment, but I still wasn’t very happy. “Just don’t do it again,” I sighed, sitting back down on the bench and looking around at all of my new friends.

“Where did you learn to play like that?” Haruhi asked once she realized I had calmed down.

“When my parents were still alive, I spent a lot of time by myself,” I said with a shrug. I laid a finger on one of the keys sadly as I remembered all those lonely days. “I taught myself how to play and the piano became my best friend.”

“Your parents are dead?” Hikaru asked. Kaoru elbowed him in the ribs and glared but I just waved my hand to indicate that it was ok.

“Yes, about two or three years ago,” I replied. “My brother took care of me for a while, but I’ve been living on my own for the past year.”

“You live on your own?!” Tamaki gasped, looking horrified.

“It’s not that big of a deal, Senpai,” I sighed. “I work to pay for groceries and things, but my brother insists on paying the rent and any tuition fees I might have.”

“Is living on your own a choice then?” Kyouya asked.

                “That’s right,” I nodded.

“Mi-chan, will you play some more for me?” Honey begged, looking up at me with wide eyes.

“I don’t know,” I hesitated. I didn’t really mind that they had heard me play, but I wasn’t sure I could play knowing they were watching and listening.
