Alexia's POV:

I dropped my son off then drove to my old 1st grade teacher's house. Ms. Hecate was always so nice. It is two hours away but I have no work today so I have time to kill. When I got there, she was standing by the gate of her beautiful home waiting for me. She's in her late fifties but looks 25, as young as I look.

"Good morning, Alexia, nice to see you again. How long has it been...?"

"It's been about a year, good morning to you too, Rubie. I came with a request."

"It's freezing out, you do realize that sweetie. Let's go have some cake and coffee inside." The woman smiled at me with genuine pleasure. A warmth sparked in me that I haven't felt in ages. Kindness. She gestured to me and I followed her into her living room. We sat down.

"Coffee. Cake." (poof) Two cups of coffee and a chocolate cake appeared on the coffee table. "Chocolate, your favorite. The coffee is two parts half & half, one part sugar and vanilla."

"My goodness. Thank you." I got up and awkwardly hugged her where she was sitting. It was a welcome hug. "I had forgotten how your hospitality rivals that of the Queen's servants!" I laughed.

"I have not fogotten a thing about you my dear. As you may remember, your kind interests me. Not only that, but you and that boy are the only ones left..." She sliced a piece of the cake for me and handed it to me before serving herself.

"Yeah, I know. There isn't one day that I can feel at ease because of it. I love my son and would do anything to see him enjoy the world that I brought him into. I am very thankful for your support."

"How have you recovered from the incident?"

My body stopped in its place as the flashback forced its control of my thoughts.

Derek and I got home from the movie theatre that I took him to for the award he got at school. The lawn was unearthed. The door missing. We ran into the house and looked for my son Benni and Nyk, my husband. Instead we found Rubie with a limp sack in her arms.

"Ms. Hecate? What are you doing in my house and what happened here? Where are Nyk and Benni?" I remember asking worriedly.

"Benni and Nyk are dead. This is Benni, I came too late." She handed me the sack and it weighed like Benni, and his shoes were sticking out. I threw up on the side and cried. Cried. Sobbed. Whimpered. Cried. I had just lost half of my family, the same way I lost my parents. "I tried everything I know, I can't bring him back. I'm sorry."

After that everything became a blur and I remember finiding the remnants of Nyk's body. They were scattered in the basement..."

"Well, I'm managing. Pretty well I think, we don't go into the basement though. Its all full of spiderwebs anyway."

"That's good news. How is the boy anyway? Still doing good in school?"

"He's absolutely wonderful, at schoolwork that is. He seems to be going through some sort of mini depression, but that's probably a teenager thing, haha." I took a sip of the coffee and a bite of the amazing cake.

"Why do you lie to me, I'm a witch for god's sake. Plus it doesn't take much to tell when one is being untruthful." She caught me. I don't know how I expected to get away with it.

"Okay, fine. I caught him cutting himself more than once, he's terrible at hiding blades and bloodied towels anyway. I would step in but he barely communicates with me as it is. His dad was definitely his favorite parent, and I just get tired of trying no matter how much I love him." I said defeated. "The incident has definitely taken a toll on our relationship." She looked satisfied at my confession.

"I am glad that you trust me enough to share with me your troubles. Look, I can make you a hex to fortify the relationship wi-"

"No." I cut her off, knowing damn well what she was going to suggest. "I plan on mending our connection myself. Thank you."

"As you wish." She said, unphased by my little rebellion. "I am glad to be kept up to date with your life. What did you want to request? What brings you to me?" She said that last bit with a little too much curiosity. I felt like a zoo animal.

"As you know, Derek and I don't like the house. It has too many bad memories for us to continue to live with, and his happiness is what I want."

"I do know."

"We want to move to San Jose, this summer."

"Sweetie, you know how dangerous relocation is... The warlocks will undoubtedly do away with you like they did your family."

"Just listen. We have a terrible atmosphere in that house and my son is some emo weirdo. We are moving there, and my request is that you come with us. We need your protection, as we are the last ones. Help us to survive, to continue our bloodline. Do you wish for another one of god's creatures be eradicated from the face of earth?"

"I will consider it." She said blankly, clearly without true interest. "I value my existence just as much as you do. I fear death, those warlocks have more power than either of us can imagine. They killed my sister so effortlessly... plus all of my ward spells are here."

"Make new ones."

"This is all so sudden, Alexia."

"We have all summer."

"You're really stubborn, you know."

"Yeah, I know. I'll text you and we can discuss stuff there." I looked at my watch, pretending like I had somewhere to go.

"Get me three virgin people and some gold and I'll be able to relocate with you." I gave her my watch, it was made of gold.

"Three virgins, got it." I stood up and chugged the coffee. Wow I can't believe she accepted, Derek will be so happy.

"Take care, star student."

"I always do, Ms. Hecate."
