Bang! Kallie woke to the sound of a gunshot outside. She rushed downstairs and out the door. Bang! It was far away. She couldn't see much in the cloudy night sky but with another loud bang, closer this time, she saw a puff of bright orange flame and smoke.

Bang! Kallie ran into the basement. It was dark and there was no time to find a light switch. Kallie felt her way frantically around until she got to the old rusty bathtub that she had kept in case a tornado hit. She did live in Kansas, after all.

She laid on the floor in a ball and carefully closed the bathtub over herself, the only air coming from the small hole that used to be the drain. She clutched the compass that hung around her neck. Her mother had given her the compass for her thirteenth birthday. Now, four years later, she brought it wherever she went. Wait. Her parents!

Kallie tried to push the bathtub off of her, but the Earth was shaking so much she couldn't move it. She tried again and again, but it was useless. She was trapped.

Bang! It sounded a lot louder and a lot closer this time. Bang! Bang! Bang! They seemed to be coming from everywhere now. BANG! Kallie felt the Earth shake. She let out a scream, and the faint stream of light coming from the basement disappeared.
