Closing my eyes as I leaned against the wall, I breathed in deep. I had already been in the hospital for almost twelve hours working without a break. I've had to relieve myself for about two. Cracking my eyes open, I glanced down at my pager. I had to clean one room and change the catheter bag in another. They could wait a few minutes. I was exhausted and about ready to drop. I needed to feed.
Pushing off from the wall, I hurried over to the closest bathroom. As soon as I walked in, I caught a glance of a young woman in the mirror staring at me. Her hair was coming out of her bun and her eyes were bloodshot. God, I looked like hell. As soon as I finished, I went to the older man's room. Knocking on the door before entering, smiling brightly as I walked into the room. "Good morning Mr. Garner. How are you doing today?" Without wanting to use what ached inside me to be released, feeling his life force flutter in front of me, faint as a mouses squeak. I couldn't feed from him.
The older man was laying back in his bed. I saw his eyes glance over at me, lifting his hand to show acknowledgement before returning his attention back to the TV. The only thing Mr. Garner would ever watch was the news. I loved to hear about it, even when he was recovering from surgery. I walked up and checked the screen, making sure his vitals were stable before glancing at his bag. Two hours had already passed and his bag was halfway full.
Walking over to the desk, I looked through the drawers until I found a fresh bag. I attached it with ease, telling Mr. Garner good bye and heading out. I was glancing down at my pager again when I was knocked into. I squeaked, grabbing onto who was in front of me. When I realized who I was grabbing, I let go.
"I'm sorry Doctor Nazari, I didn't see you going into Mr. Garner's room." In case you were wondering, this was my boss. He was the head Cardiologist in the building and honestly the best in the city. My face reddened as I stared at him.
Watching him smile, he patted my arm. "I'm fine. I'm checking up on George before I head out. You looked like you've had a long day. Maybe you should head home?" Doctor Nazari just bent his head and clutched his clipboard to his chest as he walked past me into the patients room. I took a deep breath and walked over to the Nurses station and glanced over at my coworker.
"You going home Hazel?" Nancy didn't even bother turning around. I almost snorted before I replied. I began to focus on her life energy, finding it almost overflowing. She had so much and I was in need. Instead of indulging myself, I only took a little sip and that made my craving even worse. Nancy swayed in her seat for a moment before glaring at me. As much as I didn't like her, I couldn't take more than she could handle. Human's can always remake the life energy unless people like me take too much.
"I've been here my whole shift. I'm tired and I'm almost ready to drop." I needed to feed and of course I wasn't going to tell her that. Nancy was a devout Southern Baptist and she would condemn me to hell if I ever told her I had fed from her life energy.
I almost wanted to squirm under her gaze, but I wasn't about to give her the satisfaction. "Go home." Thank God. I didn't need to be told twice to go home. Feeling slightly guilty I quickly clocked out and grabbed my purse before heading out the door. Like hell if I was going to come back again until my next shift. I love my job, but it was draining.
Pulling out my phone, I saw that Ramsey had texted me. Ramsey was my closest friend outside of coworkers. Looked like he was already off for the day. That must happen when you're a mechanic and you can choose your hours. My fingers flew over the keys as I told him I was off of work and I needed to get a quick snack before heading over.
You guys might be wondering why I keep talking about eating and life energy. I am what is called a Psychic Vampire. We don't feed off of blood; although those types of vampires are real; we feed from life energy. We take some of your energy because we cannot create our own. When we are younger, our ability does it naturally for us. Most of my kind do not even know what they are. At least, not until they accidentally take too much.
That's a story for another day though. Ramsey was a witch. No, he didn't dance under the moon or pray to any gods. He practiced real magic. They say that magic came from demons, coming down to Earth and teaching certain people some of their gifts and interbreeding. That created the race of witches.
Witches are proud creatures, they can usually track their heritage to the original demon who sired their ancestor. Each demon gave their offspring a trait. Ramsey's family interbred with the demon named Belial. They are gifted a familiar who will stay with you forever and die when you die. Ramsey's trait was small, his nails were harder than steel and could only be cut with special nail clippers. It wasn't much, but those nails hurt.
I headed towards my car, ready to get some more energy soon. Ramsey could stand to wait just a little bit. As soon as I got in, I started driving to somewhere with many people. One place you could always count on was the mall. If I wanted some quick energy, I could just drive through the parking lot and take some from people nearby.
When I got there I focused on a young couple who were coming back from the mall. They were each holding small bags, probably getting each other gifts. I smiled slightly and dipped my head, thinking of how adorable it is to see people younger than me happy. As I slowed, I focused on their energy and started to feel the pull. I breathed in deeply, part of me reaching out to them and sucking away what little energy I could find.
The energy inside the couple pulsed, my mouth salivating at the feel. I was hungry. Trying not to take too much, I let the monster inside of me grab ahold of one of them and starting to suck away his energy. Taking only a little was hard, I wanted more. I wanted all of it. I forced myself to look away, dislodging my hold on him. I saw him stumble slightly and the young woman grabbing onto him, looking worried.
I drove away, feeling guilty. I didn't ask for this. I didn't ask to not be able to create my own energy and have to steal from others. Sometimes I didn't even notice I was doing it. At work, when I notice a patient looking less energetic than normal, I try to feel if I was sucking the life from them.
Passing a few more people, I glanced down at my phone and sped through the parking lot to the highway. Ramsey was waiting for me.
