Mara
Mara came in the room, slammed the door and dropped her stuff in a heap on the couch. Then she plopped down on the couch right next to her stuff, pulling off her boots throwing them to her other side. She'd move her stuff in a minute but right now she needed to breathe.
"Well at least I'm done," she sighed. But the day she had wasn't allowing her to appreciate the fact just yet. After she ran out the door and fast-walked across campus to her appointment the day just kept going. Her doctor kept suggesting that she needed to go see a therapist, but with the way her life was going she never saw when she'd have the time.
After that she ran to go hand in her paper. Walked the ten blocks from campus to the elementary school that she worked at. Once she was done she came back to campus to study for her exam for a bit. Once she was satisfied, she went, took the exam, and then hoofed it to her second job at the library. At least at this job she didn't have to do anything because pretty much everyone was past the point of needing books. They were either writing papers or studying. So all she had to do was sit there and not fall asleep since she didn't have anymore work to do.
It was now 6:30 and she was tired and hungry. Really, all she wanted was food, a nap, and a massage. However, her baeless and broke self would only be getting two of the three things on her list.
From her position on the couch she yelled out, "Anyone wanna order Chinese with me?" Immediately Ni and Diya's door opened.
"Hell yes!" Raeni replied Adair walking out of her room behind her. Diya glided out of her room, "Well if you aren't cooking we gotta eat some way and you know the cafeteria has never been it." Everyone nodded. While Ni and Diya could cook nothing compared to Mara's. Her three roommates were always plotting on how they could get her to cook more. And honestly she didn't mind, cooking made her happy.
"Nia you want anything," Raeni yelled.
"No, I'll just make a salad," she replied walking out of her room.
"Girl if you don't stop being so anti... Your skinny ass has been cooped up in that room all day studying and writing. Come eat with us and eat your feelings. You know you just gonna work it off in the gym anyway. Just get something with veggies in it." Raeni sassed. "You act like you not bout to spend two out of these next four weeks of break with your mama where she'll have you eating rabbit food and trying to find you a husband."
Sighing at Raeni's antics Nia agreed. "Fine. I do want some spring rolls and vegetable fried rice. Just tell me how much it is and Venmo charge me Mar." With that she turned and walked into her room to study.
Mara stood up, hanging up her coat and taking her boots to her room. From her room she yelled out, "Y'all my phone is on the couch. You know the code put in what you want." Walking back out in the living room in her rainbow socks, she sat in the couch folding her legs up underneath her.
"Mommy's texting you." Diya said handing her, her phone, slightly teasing her. "I put in your usual just go ahead and lock yourself in your room and call her." All of Mara's roommates knew that she and her mom were close. After her dad died a few years ago it was just the two of them in the house. It was either they got along or they continued to fight. For the most part they chose harmony.
Grabbing her phone and strolling to her room she closed the door and called her mom.
The phone rang and her mother's accented voice answered. "Did yuh read my text?"
"No mommy I just called you. We haven't talked for the day yet."
"Well no one tol yuh to go get hot feet and be suh busy."
"Well," she sighed. "I gotta do this school thing and I gotta have money to live without asking you for it."
"Just 'cause I'm sick doh mean I cyant take care of yuh. Don go werkin yahself so hard girl. Ya young."
"Ma know you don't have it. It's okay. I need to be a big girl."
"Whatever chile. How was your day?"
"Long. Ordering food now. How was chemo?"
"It was chemo. It got me feeling tiyad, but I wanted to hear your voice before I slept."
"Who went with you today?"
"Yah auntie. Driving me crazy with how she treating me like I'sa invalid. Cancer doh mean I cyant walk."
"Mom you know you can't get around like you used to. Why you does be so stubborn?" She said slightly teasing her mom putting on her accent as well. Jumping on her bed she lay down talking to her mom smiling. She was just glad to be able to talk to her.
Raeni
"I really need her to stop tryna be superwoman," I say looking at Mara's door. "Ever since she got here she's had a battery in her back moving too fast for the world. She's gonna crash and burn Yaya."
Sitting down at one of the chairs by the table in the apartment Diya replies, "And we'll be there to catch her. You know she's stubborn. She'll love on and help everyone else, while she's falling apart at the seams."
"It ain't right though."
"She's just independent."
"Independent my ass. If she's doing all of this she's gotta give up a presidency or a board position. She's doin too much."
"Babe calm down," Adair says stepping in. "She's always been good and when she isn't she figures it out. Give her space to do her. She ain't Nia. She'll fight you for trying to boss her around again."
I roll my eyes and Diya laughs. "I really don't get why y'all fight so much. But ohhh it be funnnyyyyyy."
"And the moment Mara stops being so cool and get in you face you be shook babe."
"Shut up, I ain't afraid of nobody."
"Whatever," the traitors say. They always gang up on me like this.
My phone rings. The food is here.
A/N: It's not edited. The last year after I made the resolution to start writing again my life just went into overdrive and the things I wanted for me that didn't involve school went to the back burner. But I'm here and it's 2017 and I'm trying to do more for myself. Let's see how it goes.
