I spent the whole day in a daze after my car ride with Jay. I couldn't even focus on any of my school work. It was now lunch and I had just grabbed my food about to head to the corridor when I hear my name being called. It was definitely not who I expected.
"Hey, Brianna right?" Jennifer with a devious smile stood from the her posse at her table. and I barely turned myself towards her.
"Y-yeah" My stuttering makes me come off nervous, which is probably true but all it's do is fuel her twisted self.
"Sit." She gestured to a seat in front of her.
I hesitantly follow her command and sit down awkwardly unaware of why she was even speaking to me.
"So I know we got off on the wrong foot the other day and I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. I know you don't have a lot of friends and that you don't communicate with a lot of guys so I totes understand why you'd want to use your nerdy book smarts to try to get with my boyfriend. He is a total catch, isn't he?" She looked across the cafeteria over at him talking to some of his friends causing my gaze to follow hers.
Her continuously choosing to use the term totes instead of saying the full word will forever make my soul itch.
"I just hope you understand where I'm coming from. You'd feel the same way if you were me." She pauses to take a sip of her vending machine orange juice with her own reusable glass straw. "Some loser spending time alone with your boyfriend."
"Not that anyone could imagine you with a boyfriend" Her little minion whose name I don't care to learn chimes in.
"You'd wonder, what is it about that loser that gets someone like Jay Daniels to pay attention to her? He always believed in helping the less fortunate, so that's probably what this is." She smiled as she took a bite into her burger. "So we're cool right? I'll be nice to you as long as you stay away from Jay. That includes your little studying sessions."I could not believe this. I couldn't just stop tutoring Jay. He needed my help. He needed me. Her sitting me down and saying all of this makes her sound like some jealous girlfriend—but Brianna...being jealous of me? Before I could answer Jay walks over to us.
"Hey baby" Jennifer perks up as she kissed him but not without looking at me to make sure I knew her territory is marked.
After he broke free of the kiss he played with one of his curls as I noticed he did whenever he's nervous "What's going on over here?" He gestures between Jennifer and I.
"She's trying to ge--"
"I just thought it was about time I had a friendly conversation with Jennifer" She cut me off but plays it off with a smile.
His brows furrowed as if he wasn't buying it and looks at me. "Can we talk?" He gestured for me to follow him, we walked away where Jennifer couldn't hear. I couldn't help but get a glimpse of her face and letting a sly smirk stain my face for barely a second.
We stand over by the vending machines and he leans against one. "You and Jennifer having a friendly talk? Marin, what's going on over there?"
I was prepared to tell him the truth about everything. Me having feelings for him and Jennifer's jealousy. But then I thought about it. Did I really want to? What if he doesn't feel the same? It's too soon for me to open up about this.
"Brianna" He had a serious look on my face mixed with confusion. He must've seen that I was in deep thought, but I couldn't come up with a response for him so I stare at my shoes. "Whatever, look I was just about to text you asking if you were going to the party we talked about—You know, to experience some fun?" His smile just lit up my whole mood. I got lost in it. His smile made everything clear to me.
"Yeah, I'm going."
"Good, make sure you look as good as you do right now tonight." He gave a his signature smirk with a wink and walked away.
Tonight was going to be good. I change my mind, I was finally going to tell Jay Daniels how I felt about him and he is going to reciprocate these feelings. Screw Jennifer and her jealous threats, Jay is going to be mines.
