we are often asked,
"what do you want to be
when you grow up?"
so many choices, but we all have some
aspirations for the future,
to lift into the sky and
fly far away from the earth.
yes, dreams,
the building blocks for success and happiness,
flecked with passion and bedazzled
with hope.
without them we wither,
our goals are ideals we cannot foresee,
our futures are rushing nowhere
with the steady chanting of time,
and without dreams,
we are spiraling backwards into a past
that we'd rather not revisit.
without dreams,
the earth is an eternity
without the gravity to keep us on our feet.
space is ever-reaching with no hope to
uncover even a tiny fraction of its dark matter.
without dreams,
the world spins round and round,
a carousel with no brightly-colored horses,
peeling paint and ghosts of children
who once had been joyous,
once had ridden this carousel
but left their shadows and hopes behind.
dreams are the wings that lift us
into clouds and beyond,
a flickering light in a dark, solemn sky.
dreams
the propellant, the engine
for our minds and our hearts,
so that we are driven to the realms of greatness.
the farthest reaches of the universe
can be found if only
we dare to dream.
