Chapter 9

"I'm soooooo bored!" Riley complained.
I rolled my eyes as she began to hit the back of her head against the wall. "That makes both of us."
"I wanna go shopping," she whined.
"Stinks for you," I said as I threw a pillow in the air.
"Karterrrrrr," she called, slumped against the wall.
"What?" he asked, his voice muffled by the door.
"We're booooooorrreeeeddddddd," she said.
"Get used to it," he responded.
"Ugh," Riley said, hitting her head again. To my surprise, Karter opened the door and poked his head in.
"Would you stop that? It's annoying," he said.
"You're annoying," I grumbled, throwing the pillow in the air again.
Karter opened the door fully and stepped in. "What do you want me to do? We can't exactly go to a water park."
"And whose fault is that?" I replied, leaning over to grab the pillow that had fallen off the bed.
He rolled his eyes. "Do you want to throw a party or something?"
"Yes!" Riley exclaimed.
"We're not going to throw a party, Karter," Bow called from the kitchen. I heard some clanging, presumably Bow doing the dishes.
"I know that, but they're bored out of their minds, Bow," Karter said. "Riley's going to give herself a concussion if we don't give them something to do."
"Why can't we throw a party, Bow?" Riley asked.
"Because kidnappers don't throw parties so their victims can escape," Karter responded.
"We won't escape, Karter," I said.
He looked at me. "Of course I believe that, Laur," he said sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes. "We don't have to throw a party, Karter. I just want to do something."
The doorbell rang.
"Ooh, our first guest!" Riley exclaimed excitedly.
"Still not having a party!" Bow said from the kitchen.
"I'll get it," Karter said, closing the door behind him. Riley and I stood up immediately and pressed our ears to the door.
"Hello!" a cheery female voice greeted. "I'm Angela Donovan. I just moved in next to you and I thought I'd bring these muffins as a greeting gift."
"Oh, um, thanks," Karter said. "Nice to meet you."
"Beautiful house you have," she said, her voice becoming louder. I realized she must have come inside, though I didn't hear Karter invite her in.
"Oh, hello," Bow's voice said, the clanging of the dishes ceasing.
"Angela Donovan," she said in her cheery voice. "And you are?"
"Bow... Matthews," he said. "I'm roommates with Karter."
"Ah, Karter," she said. "So that's your name."
"Yep," Karter said, sounding as though he was trying to cover his discomfort. "Well, it's been nice to meet you, Angela."
"You as well! Here are your muffins."
"Oh, yes, thank you."
"Of course! Would you two like to come over for dinner tonight?"
There was a pause. "Um, I'm not sure if we can," Bow finally said. "We have to..."
"Go on a date," Karter finished for him. "With our girlfriends."
"Yeah. We really can't avoid it, sorry," Bow said.
"Well they can come as well!" Angela welcomed. "It's so nice meeting new people in this neighborhood. See you at six!"
And the door closed behind her.
Karter cursed. "I hate cheery people."
"I think we have bigger problems, Karter," Bow said. "We can't go to dinner tonight."
"Why not?" Karter asked. "It's just dinner."
"What about the girls? We can't leave them here alone."
"She did say to bring our girlfriends," Karter pointed out.
"Oh no, no, no. Not going to happen, Karter."
"Come on Bow, it works perfectly! Besides, if we don't go it'll look suspicious."
"Boss will never let us," Bow said.
"We don't have a choice," Karter replied. I stepped back quickly as I heard the door squeak. Riley, however, was not so quick. Karter opened the door and knocked her over. He frowned. "Eavesdropping?"
She nodded, rubbing her head.
"No matter," Karter said. "Get dressed, girls, we're going on a date."

Showering felt amazing.
I hadn't showered in days, and I was feeling really gross. Even if the boys had barely anything to shower with, it still felt like the best shower I had ever taken.
While Riley and I showered and got ready, Bow made a trip to the nearest store and got us some makeup and clothes to wear. Riley chose the red dress and I got a blue one. Then we both went into the bathroom and applied our makeup.
I couldn't curl my hair, so I decided braiding was the easiest option. I braided my blond hair down my left shoulder and helped Riley with her bun. Finally it was time to go.
I turned the doorknob on the bathroom door and stepped outside, the air outside of the warm bathroom giving me chills. I turned and saw Karter and Bow standing in the kitchen. They turned as we exited the bathroom and I couldn't help but stare.
They both wore dress shirts and slacks, Bow's hair combed back and Karter's spiked as usual. When I reached their eyes I saw that they were staring, too. I realized that they had never see me with makeup on.
Oh their poor eyes! I thought.
Bow cleared his throat. "Let's go, shall we?"
We all shook out of our daze and nodded. Karter stepped forwards and I took his arm while Riley took Bow's. Riley and Bow were a funny looking couple since Riley was half his age, but it would have to do.
Karter entered the code into the front door, covering it with his hand so I wouldn't see it, and the door swung open. We walked outside, my blue heels clicking on the cement as we walked down the sidewalk. It didn't take long to walk to Angela's which was a small brown brick house. Karter knocked on the door and she appeared within seconds.
Angela was in her late thirties with dark hair and eyes. A purple dress covered her olive skin and her hair hung in waves. Some people her age couldn't pull the outfit off, but she could.
"Ah, Karter and Bow, welcome! My, what beautiful girlfriends you have!"
I blushed. "Thank you."
"Come in, come in! Dinner is ready."
We followed Angela through her living room and into her kitchen. She waved for us to sit down and I take a place between Karter and Riley. Angela began rushing around the kitchen, placing plates of salad and lasagna on the table. When she finally had everything ready, she sat down and we all dished up.
"So, Angela," Karter said as he spooned some lasagna onto his plate, "where did you move from?"
"Oh, just outside of Grayson. I used to have a nice little cottage in the country."
"Why did you move?" Bow asked, stabbing some salad.
"There was a house fire," Angela replied. "It was a tragic accident, really."
"Oh my!" Riley gasped. "That's awful."
She nodded. "But I'm sure I'll love it just as much here," she said, smiling.
There was silence for a moment as we all ate. The food was very good, especially since I hadn't had a proper meal since I had been kidnapped.
"Excuse me, Angela, can I use your bathroom?" I asked. I noticed Karter tense next to me.
"Of course, dear," she said. "Here, I'll show you where it is."
We stood and she led me down a short hall to a door on the left. "Right in here."
"Thank you," I said, smiling at her. I closed the bathroom door behind me.
I finished washing my hands and was about to leave the bathroom when I heard a quiet voice outside speaking to someone I couldn't hear, probably on a phone.
"Yes, it's definitely them. I'm sure. Yes. I will. Goodbye."
There was a click as they hung up the phone. The click of heels sounded on the floor and I heard Angela return to the kitchen.
