You were sitting in another boring science lesson, listening to the teacher give the class yet another lecture about behavior. “I thought I applied to teach High school... Not 5th graders.” Ms. Pepper said to the class. You rolled your eyes and pulled out your notebook, opening it to a new page. You began to draw your favorite flower, a tiger lily, when a piece of paper hit the side of your head. Groaning, you picked it up and unfolded it.

“Coffee after school?”

You recognized that neat hand writing anywhere; it was your best friend since kindergarten, Carly.

“Sure, meet at my car?”

You wrote back then threw the paper back to her.  After the “Lesson” was over, everyone shoved everything in their backpack and practically ran through the door. Putting your stuff in your backpack you lift it up and begin to put it over your shoulder until someone pushes you, making you drop your notebook from your hands, every drawing flying all over the floor.

“Ughh” you groaned bending over to pick up your drawings. “I’m so sorry! I’m just sort of in a rush!” a male voice said from behind you. “It’s fine.. Really.” You reply, not looking at him. You felt the guy leave the classroom, you rolled your eyes and finished picking up your papers and shoving them back into your notebook and shoving your notebook in your backpack. You rushed out the door, checking the time on your phone. “Shoot!” you mumbled to yourself as you speed walked through the halls and out the door to your car to see Carly leaning against it, looking at her phone. “Carly! I’m sorry I’m late! Someone bumped into me and my notebook went flying!”  You cried out, unlocking the car and climbing in. “It’s fine Lily! Really!” She assured you while climbing into the passenger seat.

You drove to the nearest Starbucks and parked the car. You both walked inside and took a place in line. “So, did you hear that Brian is gonna ask Jessica out? Isn’t that crazy??” Carly complains. Carly has had the biggest crush on Brian since 5th grade, ever since he “accidentally” bumped into her just to get a hug from her. “Really? Who would like Jessica? She’s so annoying!” you exclaim, taking another step forward in line. “I know right! He’s better off with me..” she muttered the last part. You lightly giggle to yourself, knowing what she had said. You both finally get to the counter, “Hello ladies, what would you like?” the guy at the counter asked you. He had gorgeous blue eyes and dark brown hair. “Grande mocha cookie crumble and a Grande caramel Frappuccino.” You smiled at him and handed him a 20 dollar bill. “Alright, just a few minutes” he smiled back, handing you your change.

You and Carly took seats by the window, chatting about the latest gossip until you heard your guys’ order being called. You grabbed them then walked back over to where you and Carly were sitting. “You know that new guy, Elliott?” Carly asked you in a low voice. You looked at her quite confused, “Um, no. I don’t..” You said, taking a sip of your coffee. “He’s in your science class you dope!” she almost yelled at you. “What?” you nearly choked. “he is?” you ask, Carly nodding her head, “Come one Lily! Get with the program!” she said to you, laughing. “Is he at least cute?” you ask her, Carly nodding her head once again, with a smile on her face. “Oh.. Okay” you say, continuing to drink your coffee.

After your guys’ little coffee date, you drove Carly home then drove back to your place. You pulled up to the driveway noticing that your dad’s car was in the driveway. Confused you got out of the car and walked inside. As soon as you did you got a giant whiff of alcohol. “Dad?” you yelled out, not getting an answer you walked upstairs and looked around for him. “Dad?” you asked again, still no answer. You walked around the house, looking in every room until you got to the bathroom, the light was on and you heard coughing. “Dad?” you asked, knocking on the door. You knocked again, hoping he would open it and he did.

“What the fuck?” he slurred, the scent of beer in his breath. “Dad?” you ask, shocked. Your dad hardly ever drinks, only on game days. But the football season is over. “Dad, have you been drinking?”

“NO! Now get the fuck away from me you slut!” he yelled out, but you didn’t move from your place, you couldn’t move, you were so shocked that your dad was drunk and yelling at you. Noticing that you weren’t moving, he raised his hand up high and connected his hand to your face, making your head turn. “Owe! Dad! That hurt!” you yelled out, putting your hand to your face. “Good!” he yelled, grabbing your arm and pushing you to the ground. “What the hell dad? What has happened to you?” You screamed out, trying to get up from your place before he hits you again, but you’re too late. He kicks you hard in your stomach, you groaned and crawled away to your bedroom, locking the door behind you. You tried to think of what you could do, call the cops? No... Once your dad gets out of jail he will try to kill you again. Sneak out? It seems like a better idea, you grabbed your jacket and your car keys and crawled out of your window. Your window was only 4 feet from the ground, so you knew it wouldn’t do any damage.

“Shit…” you muttered as you heard your bedroom door break open. “Lily?! Where the fuck are you?” your drunk father screamed out. You made a beeline to your car, starting it up and rolling down the driveway with ease. You drove to the first place that came to mind. Carly’s house.

You pulled up to her driveway and parked the car, running to her door you started pounding on it. The tears that wouldn’t come out earlier started spilling from your eyes. “Lily?” A female voice said, you hadn’t even noticed that someone even opened the door. “Lily, honey what’s wrong?” you looked up to see Carly’s mother Hana standing at the door, looking at you with eyes of concern.

“M-My d-dad, he was drinking a-and…” you stuttered, not even able to speak properly you started bawling your eyes out. “Oh honey” Hana said, taking you in her arms, rubbing your back. “Come inside sweetie, Carly is upstairs.. Carly!” she yelled upstairs to her daughter. “Yes mother?” You heard Carly’s voice coming down the stairs, dressed in basketball shorts and a tank top. “Lily?” she almost cried out, seeing your appearance. “What’s wrong? What happened?” she started asking you all these questions and you couldn’t handle it. “We’re going to be up stairs, mom.” Carly said, grabbing your hand and leading you up the stairs to her bedroom. She sits on her bed and pats the seat next to her, motioning for you to sit next to her. You do so, curling up in a ball and putting your head on your knees. “Tell me what happened.” Carly demanded, patting your back.

“After I dropped you off… I casually drove home, when I got there my dad’s car was already there, I was confused so I walked inside and started looking for him. He was in the bathroom, I knocked, he opened it and started yelling at me. And…” you stopped telling your story and put your head back down. “And what? Did… Did he hit you?” She asked in a pained voice. You looked up and didn’t say anything, the look in your eyes was enough of an answer. “Oh Lil!” she said, hugging you tightly. “Do you want to stay here? I can ask my mother, I’m sure she’ll be more than happy to let you stay for a little while!” Carly assures you. You look at her and nod your head. “Alright, you know where the Pj’s are. I’m gonna go talk to my mom. Be right back” She smiled and walked out of the room.
