Chapter 1

My body shakes and contorts with every movement of the truck as it bounces along the uneven ground. I grab both sides of my seat tightly to try and steady myself but as the truck suddenly jolts unexpectedly, I fall against Tobias's shoulder. A warm smile spreads across his face as he wraps his strong arm around my shoulders holding me against him. His chin rests gently on my head and every now and again I feel his lips pressing softly against my hair.

Cold fingers gently skim my cheek as my eyes flutter open. I didn't even realise I'd fallen asleep. "How long have I been out for?" I say as rub my eyes with my palms. "A little while, not that long but were coming close to the fence now. So wakey wakey," Tobias smiles. He wraps his arm around my waist to steady me as I waken myself up. I wince as pain shoots along the bottom of my spine. I had forgotten that I had swung my gun over my shoulder and rested it against my back for safe keeping early on in the day and the butt of the gun must have been pushing against my back as I slept. I push up the hem of my shirt as I try to rub the pain out from my spine, "Here let me help," Tobias says as he reaches around and holds up my shirt. The coldness of his fingers against my bare skin causes me to shiver as he presses firmly agains my back. I squeeze my eyes shut as the pain continues to throb against my skin, but it's pain that is extremely easy to bare, especially after you know how it feels to be shot.

As Tobias lets my shirt fall back over my gun and my exposed skin he smiles and turns around to face Johanna who is now turning to address each of us as the truck slows to a halt. "This is where we say our goodbyes, the fence is just a five minute walk from here and through it a new journey awaits you, as for Marcus and I we must continue in our devotion with the Allegiant. Be brave. I hope to hear from you all one day soon." Johanna flashes is a warm smile as she pushes her hair out of her face, exposing her scar, I myself personally think she looks much more beautiful that way. Tobias jumps out of the truck first and re arranges his gun around his shoulder, I smile as he holds onto my waist to support me as I jump out of the truck myself, it has always amazed me how gentle he is, even when he is so strong. We all gather our things and watch as the truck, the last piece, the last reminder of our city, fades away back along the bumpy road.

My feet drag along the rocky path kicking each stone as it comes close. It is dark now, and it is beginning to get a lot more colder. I pull my jacket tightly against my body and continue walking for what seems like a long time, until we finally reach it. The fence. The thing that has been guarded so heavily. I crane my neck to look for any sign of dauntless guards, but of course they're nowhere to be seen. I drop my hand by my side and I feel Tobias's fingers intertwine with mine. We walk in silence. Each of us wondering, what lies...beyond the fence.
