Loss

Chapter One

     Clementine looked at the walker, frozen and speechless in shock.
     "Why?!" She managed to gasp out.    
     Clementine noticed she was stepping on something, and moved her foot to see.. a pregnancy test, positive. Clementine didn't know how they worked, but she knew that if it's positive, you were having a baby, And the key on it also confirmed that Jane was pregnant. She didn't know how to feel.. sad, shocked, angry, I guess it was a mix of all of those emotions. Jane... killed herself? Why? She promised Clem before that she wouldn't leave her behind but she just did. She's just.... gone. Clementine tried blinking to wake up but..., that of course didn't work.
I have to... She thought. I have to.. put her out of her misery, just like with--
She couldn't think about him now. Especially, not now. She grabbed her knife out of the sheath that Jane had given her... and ended her suffering.
Clementine started to cry. Jane's even the one who told her that she'd probably have to do this to people she cared about but.. actually doing it is easier said than done.
     Kenny heard the whining and crying and came out to check on Clem
     "Clem? Are you oka--" He stopped. "She.. why?!"
     Clementine didn't have any words to speak. She just handed Kenny the pregnancy test, and let that speak for her.
     "Luke got her--" Kenny tried to say. He was so shocked, he knew that Jane was never so fond of AJ but.. to kill herself over a child?
     "We need to bury her" Clem said. It hurt to talk, to walk, to function. She thought that maybe everything with Jane and Kenny would be ok, but now this... it just took a huge toll on her that day.
     "Could you go get AJ outta bed while I get her down please, hun?" Kenny asked, feeling bad for the child.
     Clem nodded and went back to her room to find AJ bundled up nicely, fallen back asleep.
     "AJ?" Clem asked with the softest voice she could at that point. "Time to wake up"
     AJ woke up, excitedly. Clem felt bad, she promised him they would leave but now.. it has to wait due to the situation.
     Clem's face being sad showed AJ something was wrong, so he narrowed his eyebrows to try and ask Clem to say what had happened.
     "AJ... Jane went.. bye bye" She said, almost crying again. "You know what that means by now and since this happened... we can't leave until a little bit later ok?"
     AJ was upset of course, but he understood why and just decided to keep his disappointment in as much as he could.
     Suddenly, there was a loud CLUNK coming from inside the living room, indicating that Kenny had gotten down Jane from the fan
     "Don't look, ok AJ?" Clem said while opening her backpack. AJ nodded, got in, and just laid down on the inside, obeying Clementines request.
     Clementine went back to the living room to find Kenny panting a little bit. It must have been hard to get her down.
     "Clem, help me?" Kenny said while lifting Jane's top half. "To the backyard"
     This made Clem ache. Having to carry a dead body of someone who only tried to care for you was very painful to do. Not physically, but sure as hell mentally.
     After putting down Jane's body in the backyard, Kenny said "Ok, it shouldn't take to long to dig a hole deep enough. Let's get her buried, say goodbye, and then head out to look for somewhere else to settle"
     "Yeah, ok" Clementine said. Conveniently, there were two shovels right beside the shed in the backyard.
     They dug for about 30 minutes to dig a hole big enough. For an older man and a child, this was pretty fast. But they didn't have too much time to spend, and they didn't want to look at the dead corpse anymore either.
     Kenny grabbed the top half of Jane and motioned for Clementine to get the other side.
     "I'll miss her..." Clem said.
     "She may not have been my favorite, but she was only around to help and support you so, I'll miss her too" Kenny said, actually seeming to mean it.
     After covering up the grave with dirt, Clem wanted to say some things. Not to make it a funeral, but to say goodbye.
    "Jane, I'll miss you. I remember seeing you in Carver's prison and thinking 'who's the weird girl covered in blood' but, I was glad to have met the girl under all the rotten flesh. You were an interesting person, you cared about those around you, but you were willing to leave if it was necessary, but then, you came back and saved us all. I understand that you don't think having a baby at this time is great, but I at least wish I got a proper goodbye. And, I wish I could have stopped you too but, I couldn't and I'm sorry" This is where tears started streaming down her face "but... I hope you're in a better place, and I hope you'll always be watching over me. Goodbye Jane"
     And with that, they packed up their things, and left the cottage.

Living on the road was difficult. Not like Clem hadn't done it before but, living in the Motel Inn or any other place with food or walls was much more preferred by Clem than this but, staying in that cottage wasn't an option. They needed food, and unfortunately, that place didn't have enough to offer so, they had to leave.
     Jane's death affected Clementine the day it happened but, sadly enough, she was used to people around her dying. Thinking their names as she walked, Clem started to get a bit teary so she just wanted to talk to Kenny at that point
     "It's sad that this is the normal thing that happens now" Clem said. "That we're used to people around us dying"
     "Sure is, Clem. But the reason why it always ends up hurting is because you cared about each other in a special way and then, they're gone"
     That made Clem think about Sarita when Kenny said that. She knew Sarita's death wasn't exactly anyone's fault but, Clementine would take some of the blame since she's the one who tried to help.
     Kenny and Clem both spotted two rabbits ahead, just rummaging around. They knew they couldn't get too close before the rabbits running away so, they drew their guns
     Kenny had just shot one and just before Clem was going to pull the trigger, AJ started babbling in a playful way, causing the rabbit to try and run away. Kenny wasn't going to let a good meal for the three go to waste, so he took a chance and tried to shoot it in-motion and sure enough, he actually shot and killed the rabbit. Right after telling AJ to quiet and calm down, they put the rabbits in Kenny's backpack, and right as they were gonna walk away, four people, two adults and two kids it seemed, approached them, kindly and without any threats.
