When I wake up, the first thing I see is sunlight. Sunlight filtering in through the thin curtains into my small room. I sigh. Yet another day to endure. I crawl out of my bed slowly and rub my eyes. Then I remember. Today is the first day of winter. Immediately I feel better. Winter is usually the season in which I feel most in my element. I don't know why, but it just feels right. I hear someone calling me from downstairs. I quickly pull on a jumper, some jeans and my old battered trainers. I walk out of my room, but pause in the doorway. I turn around, and scan the room. I see it glinting on my mahogany dresser. My bracelet. I slip it over my pale wrist. It is a beautiful little thing with its silver interlocking chains, and the single petite emerald set in the centre. It is my most precious possession. I hide it with my jumper, and bound down the stairs.
