Chapter 16

Listen. Do you hear it? Do you hear the retched silence that fills my empty soul? Do you feel the loneliness within my heart? Don't you see the heartbreak in my eyes, the sadness on my wrists?

I set my book down on my table & grabbed a snack from the kitchen. As I popped a few walnuts into my mouth i continued to read my book. I was slouched down comfortably & i was wearing a big baggy sweater, black leggings & my long brown hair flowed down my back with a slight wave to it.

The book i was reading was a sad one. But it ended on a happy note. All day i was sitting here reading, I couldn't put this book down. It was so good & inspirational. I had nothing else to do, I was grounded. My dad found out about me sneaking away with Austin.

He flipped. He screamed & yelled, threatening to go to Austin's & beat him to death. Quite frankly, he wasn't lying. I mean he wouldn't kill him, but he'd probably leave a few good marks on him. But I wasn't going to let that happen.

I ended up punching him, in the stomach actually. I was trying to keep him away from the door. I was trying to keep him away from his car so he couldn't go hurt Austin. But I ended up paying the toll.

My collarbone had been hit, almost throwing me to the ground in pain. My dad hit me. He'd never do something like that.. He's never been like that. I knew my dad, & this wasn't him.

And thats when I knew something was up.

But before I said anything else, I ran to my room & cried for hours. I was stuck with him for 2 1/2 more months, he was barely ever here, he restricted me any access to Austin, he grounded me, I had to deal with my feelings for Austin & now i had an enormous bruise spreading across the top of my collarbone.

Remember when I explained my life to you? Do you remember what I said?

Because clearly i portrayed it to be way better than it truly is.

The reality of it all is that nothing in my life has been perfect. Ever. I just needed a new start but i didn't know exactly where to start in the first place.

My phone buzzed on the bed beside me & i reached over to it.

Austin: Hi beautiful. How are things? I haven't talked to you since the other night. Are you okay? I miss you princess.

I locked my phone & disregarded his message. I needed to get away for a while. Of course not physically, but mentally. So i laid my head onto my pillow & drifted off to sleep. So that, for only a few hours, could I forget about all the issues i had to deal with.

**5 hours later**

I sat at the edge of the tank, after touring the last customer of the day. The sky was fading away, & i gotta say.. It looked really beautiful. The oranges, yellows, even purples & blues mixed with eachother in the sky.

"Hey Austin, I'm gonna let you lock up alright?"

"Yep, no problem Jeff." I said, catching the set of keys he'd tossed to me.

"You have a good night now kid." He smiled.

"You too." I laughed softly.

I pushed myself up from the cement & brushed off my shorts. I sighed going to the back to put away my equipment & as I walked back there i found a note stuck to the bin.

Austin,

Could you please take a little extra time out before you leave and clean up the locker rooms?

I rolled my eyes crumbling the note within my hand.

This was stupid.

Clearly I had better things to do, especially go see Mckenzie, and now I had to clean up everyone else's mess.

I couldn't refuse so i grabbed some towels & spray cleaner making my way towards the locker rooms. I wiped them all down, & i mopped the floors, cleaned out stuff people had left over & took it to the lost & found & finally i clocked out, locking the doors.

This was only the 3rd time id had to lock up for Jeff, so i checked every door atleast 4 times while I walked around making sure i didn't miss anything. Finally i was satisfied with my work, & i walked out making my way back home.

I normally walk to and from work since it was only about 3 miles away, but I didn't know i was gonna have to stay after & it was pretty dark out by now. It didn't really bother me, nothing really scared me. Its not like i was afraid of getting jumped or shot at. Plus, i was prepared always anyways.

On my way back home i passed Mckenzies house, & the urge to go see her was really strong. But I knew it probably wasn't safe right now. Her dad would probably be home soon. As I passed by i saw a small light lighting up her bedroom through her window.

I really wanted to go see her.

I walked past it, but I couldn't wait until later. I needed to see her now.

I walked towards her window & tapped on it a few times, hoping i wouldn't startle her like i did last time.

I could hear her moving around a few moments before she pulled back her curtain & smiled at me.

"Austin.." She said softly in excitement. I saw her eyes lit up when she looked at me.

"Mckenzie.." I smiled, reaching inside running my thumb over her cheek.

"Why are you," she yawned.

"What are you doing here?" She said.

"I wanted to see you. You never answered my text, is everything okay?" I whispered.

Her hand scanned through my hair falling onto my face. Her index finger softly fell onto my bottom lip & pulled it down slowly before she leaned in to kiss my cheek.

"Everything's fine." She hummed. "I fell asleep after reading my book." She giggled looking down.

"Good." I smiled.

"So, can you hang tonight?" I asked.

"I wish..but maybe tomorrow we can," she sighed. He hands running up at down my arms.

"Tomorrow night of course." She finished.

"I missed you so much. I thought about you all day.." I whispered, tucking her hair behind her ear.

"Austin.." She giggled quietly.

"No actual feeli-" she started, but I stopped her by pressing my lips to her where they fit perfectly. She kissed back & our lips stuck together like glue.

I smiled through the kiss & pulled away.

"Stop denying what you know is true.." I whispered planting a kiss on her cheek.

I hear her dad pull into the drive way & i kissed her nose before leaving so her dad didn't catch me.

As I ran my way back to the street, i turned back to see her watching me.

I mouthed, "i love you" & kept going.
