I opened my room door and started to scream.
My bed had been messed up, my cupboards emptied and everything upset. But that wasn't the worst thing.
Bianca lay unconscious on the floor, face down, as if she had been knocked out from the back.
"Mindy? Are you-"
"Get away from my daughter. What's wrong? Miranda, you were screaming." My dad pushed his way pass Theo and took my face into his hands, checking for any injuries.
"She... she's dead?" My teeth chattered, afraid of his answer.
My father nodded at Theo, eyes on him as if he were responsible.
Theo reached around her neck. Covering my eyes, I felt my father sigh. She was still breathing.
"What happened here?" My father asked, looking weary.
"I woke up early and she was just lying on the floor, so I jumped over her to get away from her."
My father looked skeptical, but didn't ask me anything further, maybe since I looked hysterical.
"You! Why are you here?"
"I heard her... I didn't... Sir, I came to help."
"My boy, you better be stuttering because of my harsh questioning. If I come to hear that you were involved in this... this mutiny, I won't play the calm and collected man that I am. I will be harsher."
My mind was spinning. Theo took me out, we had a moment, a small one but one nonetheless. What if this was all a plan. Maybe he was... is psychotic like her. Maybe he was involved.
Oh, how could I be so stupid to go out with him? And in such odd hours? Thank God I had some brains to bring along others. What if he wanted to kill me with his dog? Maybe he hadn't thought I would scream so loud.
"The investigators are coming. Better polish that story. Theodore, get out from here if you aren't guilty. I'm tired of these incidents."
Theo left, head bowed slightly. He shit me a glimpse of a smile and walked out.
"The nurse should be here just now. But before she comes, I just hope you aren't getting too involved with anyone here."
"Dad--"
"I've given you the privelage to go out with that girl, Kaitlynne. I don't expect you to violate that. You're young and as your father, I only care for your wellbeing. You are at a prime time of your school and I don't think it's appropriate. Please, Miranda, don't limit yourself to a cliché of a typical teenager."
"Dad. There isn't anything between Theo and I, if anything were hardly friends. I don't really know much about the guy. As he said, he heard me scream and came to help. There isn't much else."
"Alright, just a word of advice. Let me clean up this mess."
I was baffled by my father. One moment he trusted that Theo was okay to guard me and the next? He was the object of evil.
I didn't quite trust him either, but before I could think more, the investigator called me.
"Miss Lewis. I understand that you are a target for... whatever this is. Do you suspect that she may have an agenda because of a particular reason?"
"What kind of a question is that? Of course! Why else would this suddenly start."
"Ma'am--"
"I'm not an old lady."
"Miranda, please let me ask the questions. Did you know Bianca before all of this?"
"Kind of."
"Please elaborate."
"I knew her as Ray's girlfriend."
"Ray? Are you talking about Raydon?"
"Yeah. Anyways, I knew he liked her, but recently he'd been getting annoyed by how clingy she was becoming."
"Do you have any reason as to why she was becoming like that?"
"He always said it's because she didn't like him being with me."
"Was Raydon ever unfaithful to her that she might assume this?"
"Ray? No! He was my best friend. If anything, I was his only friend aside from Bianca. He wasn't that type, to be with other girls."
"I understand from data of his phone that you two had unauthorised communication devices."
"That's not true. We used the phones from this institute. I just modified it to access him too."
"Have you any history of hacking?"
"Like that guy... Assange?"
"Yes. On a lower scale though."
"How is this information going to help to get her away from me?"
"Are you diverting from the question? It was simple enough."
"No, I don't hack anything."
I watched as his blonde head nodded to his writing hand.
"You look like you were awake before we came."
"I can't scream if I'm sleeping."
"What made you wake up early?"
"I... I just did."
"So you had no motive... no inclination to wake up early?"
"No?"
"Are you not definite?"
"No, I am. I just find it odd that you think I had a reason to wake up early. Are you trying to psych me into admitting to attacking Bianca? She's the reason I have this problem, why would I create this elaborate scheme to set myself up?"
"Miranda, I think we should take a break. You are getting too emotional at this moment. We'll talk later if time permits."
"I'm sorry, sir. I just... I just want this to end."
Indeed my emotions were catching up to me. The overwhelming sensation that I felt when Raydon... passed, and then Theo, now this... I hadn't really had time to think about anything.
I have my father a silent motion, indicating where I was heading. He nodded, probably realising that I needed space.
Sure, it takes time to heal, but what if time wasn't on my side? What if nothing was?
