Chapter Seven

"Why do we have to go to school, I'm never going to use any of this anyways?" Ashley groans as we walk out of the school on our way home.

"Well, now we're walking away from it so you'll be fine for another day." Skye pats her on the shoulder.

Ashley, Skye, Kayla, Emily, Josh, Riley, Duke, and Nick and me are all walking home (we have a big group). We were all having different side conversations walking down the path towards Kayla's house, she's the one that goes home first.

"Bye Kayla!" I scream over everyone's conversation. Everyone else says bye to those two and we continue walking. Ashley's next, then Riley, which brings us to Skye's house.

"Can I come over in 15 minutes?" Skye asks me.

"For sure. Text me when your on your way." I reply. We all hug her goodbye and continue walking. Nick walks across the street to his house, then Emily, which now I'm the only girl walking. Josh turns off to go to his house which leaves just the two of us. Duke and I.

We are at the end of the block where Duke normally turns off, but he comes my way. More butterflies appear in my stomach as some were already there (I was with Duke, there's always butterflies).

"I thought you went the other way?" I ask, trying to keep myself together.

"Yeah, I wanted to take the long way today." He smiles, oh no, here comes the blushing. I hope my hair covers it.

We walk half way to my house talking about random stuff like making fun of our horrible teachers and things I can't even remember. Duke says something to make me laugh and then he stops, dead in his tracks, his smile fades and his face goes pale. The smile quickly fades from my face as well.

"What's going on?" I say concerned walking back to Duke.

"Umm, well, uh..." He stutters, now I'm kind of nervous. "Well, when Emily told me that you liked me I was debating myself if I liked you or not. I now know the truth." Holey crap, what is happening. He continues, "I like you Shelby, and that's not a lie. Not knowing if you like me back was holding me back from liking you but now that I know you like me it was confirmed. I like you Shelby, and I was wondering if you would be my girlfriend?"

Oh my fricking gosh, this is not happening. This has to be a joke, I bet it's for a game show there is probably hidden cameras somewhere watching my reaction just to tell me it's a joke. Or it's a dare, his friends are probably hiding in the bushes ready to jump out and laugh at me soon. Or I'm dreaming, yup, that's it, I'm dreaming. This isn't real.

"Shelby...?" My eyes shoot back to Duke's as he reaches for my hand, I let him take it as the butterflies intensify. "Can you please say something?" He says with his voice cracking at the end.

"I'm so sorry, I...umm, would love to be your g-girlfriend." My voice is uneasy and he smiles, which then makes me smile and he pulls me into a hug.

There are so many emotions running through my head, all good emotions. Like happiness, love, nervous, excited, and a lot more.

We continue walking to my house, talking about us, not like sappy couple stuff. Like, when we started liking each other and what we like about each other. It's not awkward at all, I thought it was going to but it's not. 

We get to the end of my block and we decided to keep it a secret and see how long it takes for people to figure it out or ask us about it.

Duke and I arrive at my doorstep. There is no one home as my parents are on a "couples get away weekend" and my sister is at a sleepover studying for her diploma's so it's just me.

"So, I'll see you at school tomorrow." He says and I do the worst thing I could've probably done, I ramble.

"Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow, and thanks for today. When Emily told me to text you that I like you I couldn't do it and I was actually freaking out the whole two weeks of Christmas break because I wasn't sure what you were going to say or do and I'm just so happy this happened an-"

He cuts me off, in the best way possible... He kisses me.

Duke puts his arm around my back and pulls me closer to him and he kisses me. At first I was shocked but as soon as I realized what was happening I relaxed and it's a good thing he was holding me otherwise I would've fallen to the ground because my legs felt like jello.

Duke pulls away and says, "I'll see you tomorrow." He smiles and walks away, leaving me on my doorstep with a huge smile on my face. I wave him goodbye and step in my house and close the door.

I can't believe that just happened.
