Chapter Nineteen
My heart stops. Is he serious? Does he actually not know how I am?
I stare at him with a blank look and I can feel the tears coming. Just as I am about to crack Riley walks in the room.
"Shelby, what's wrong?" He must've saw the look on my face.
"He doesn't remember..."
"What? He doesn't remember what?"
One single tear falls down my cheek as I look up at Riley, "me." I say simply. Riley makes me stands up and pulls me into a hug while I cry into his shoulder. Duke decides to speak now.
"Hey Riley, what are you doing here?" Duke laughs after. How does he remember Riley and not me? Riley and I exchange a look of confusion as the doctor walks him.
I tell the doctor what happened as he goes directly to Duke sitting on the chair I was previously on, "what's the last thing you remember?"
"Umm, Riley and I were riding down the path and I went over a bump and I fell and then everything went black and I woke up here."
I'm still extremely confused but I realize that I'm his first girlfriend so if he really doesn't remember me, he'll say he's never had one. I walk over to the doctor and whisper this to him. The doctor immediately asks, "have you ever had a girlfriend?"
"Nope." He said it so simply, so quick, without any thought I knew he never remembered. The doctor looked at the two of us and since I was starting to cry again Riley pulled me out of the room.
Riley and I sit outside his room waiting for the doctor to tell us what is wrong. Sure enough after a while he comes out with the verdict.
"So, it seems he has a very light case of amnesia but some serious cuts that he can easily heal from."
"What do we do about the amnesia?" Riley asks very calmly and put together.
"Since it's only a light case, he will slowly start to remember the things he's forgotten," there is a pause and he starts again, "if you want me to narrow down on what he does and doesn't remember I can ask him a few questions if you write them down on this notepad." He hands us both a notepad and pen and walks off.
I stare at the blank page for a while and then I look at Riley and he's casually writing down questions about his friends to see if Duke forgets anybody else. I start writing questions down about our relationship and my friends. After what feels like no time at all the doctor is back to take our questions. I extend my hand with the notepad in it and of course it's shaking, I'm nervous.
Both of us sit where we were for about another half hour and the doctor hasn't come out yet so we decide to go and get lunch. We go to the cafeteria and Riley pays without me even knowing because I wasn't paying attention.
We get back to the chairs and I sit sideways in one and flop my legs over the arm rests so my feet are in Riley's lap. After we finish eating and Riley throws out our garbage, the doctor comes to see us once again to tell us the news.
"Well...?" I ask.
"Okay, so Riley: he answered all your questions with the answers you gave as well, he remembers that." he's uses a very happy tone but it quickly changes to that of a somber tone when he talks to me, "Shelby: he answered all the questions about your friends with the answers you provided so he remembers that but about your relationship, he had no idea."
I pause for a second until something in my brain clicks, "so he only forgets me and our relationship?"
"Yes."
This hits me like a brick wall. I never knew you could only forget a part of your life. Obviously it's possible and the only thing I can do now is wait.
Wait.
Until he remembers me again.
