Kazuma and the crew had been on the road for no less than 2 hours, in a SUV that Ayano had gotten for them, and already Ayano was ready to kill Niyumi and Azaraki. The two apparently couldn't stand each other. Yamari was just sitting in the back quietly reading a book she had brought for the trip. Kazuma was driving, and Ren was in the back with Yamari, and Azaraki and Niyumi were in the middle. As much as Ayano tried to drown out their bickering, she couldn't take it any longer.
"What are you two arguing about?!" Ayano glared back at the both of them. They quit their argument for the moment, stared back at her, and yelled in unison, "NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!" That just got them both more worked up. Ayano summoned Enraiha and stuck it in between them. They both shut up quickly.
Ayano looked back and forth at them. "Now, if you want to live long enough to earn your freedom, you better shut up and behave the rest of the way there."
Azaraki and Niyumi sat with their backs to each other, staring out their respective windows. Kazuma, who had been ignorant of the whole situation that had unfolded in the car, had been lost in thought about the demons they were up against, and how to beat them.
"Yamari?" Kazuma looked back at Yamari. She was so lost in her book she didn't realize he called for her. He shot a bit of wind and closed her book. She looked up at him. "What?" she asked him sarcastically as she reopened her book.
"Is that going to be enough water for you? We are going to a desert, so there's not going to be a spring or pool you can resupply from like at Ayano's house."
Yamari looked back at the ten barrels of water on the trailer behind them. She thought about it for a minute, then looked back at Kazuma. "Maybe. Depends on those snakes of yours. How big they are, how many there are, and whether or not the fire encasing them will go out or not. After all, they are demons. For all we know, their fire could be invulnerable."
"Good point. Well let's hope not." Kazuma went back to his thought, and Yamari went back to her book. The ride was was quiet for another hour or so before Niyumi and Azaraki were back at it, with Ayano at their throats.
"If you two don't cut it out I'm going to blast both of you back to the prison! Is that understood?!" Ayano had already summoned her mystical sword, Enraiha. Niyumi and Azaraki both instantly cloed their mouths and the car ride was quiet for another hour or so, before they came upon a desolated ruin. Kazuma pulled through the what once was a gate to a town, still hot with burning embers. Kazuma pulled over and parked just inside the gate. Everyone got out, and no longer than 5 minutes had gone by while they were investigating the town, the earth shook around them.
"What's happening?! Is it an earthquake?" Ren lost his balance and fell to the ground next to Azaraki, who had already lost his balance.
"I'm not sure, but we can't stay here!" Kazuma yelled. They started back for the SUV when Ayano looked back and saw what had made the earth shake.
"Wait! Kazuma!" Ayano screamed. Kazuma turned around just in time to see a giant fiery tail swinging towards Ayano. He shot a blast of wind and knocked it away, barely missing her. The snake turned towards them, and with a loud hiss, climbed as high as it could stand. It stood easily five stories high, with still about one hundred feet of tail still on the ground.
"That's what we're fighting?!" Azaraki yelled. "That's to big! We'll never beat that thing!"
Yamari apparently didn't think the same thing. She already had her water out, and had encased herself in a giant water octopus, just about matching the snakes size. She immediately started lashing out at it, hitting it with water from every side. The snake struck back, cutting her water encasing in half. It didn't take her long though to rebuild her stature, while Kazuma and Azaraki, who had composed himself, gave her cover. Ayano and Ren stood back with Niyumi, watching the battle unfold before them.
Yamari continued lashing out at the demon, putting out the fire covering it's body.
"Azaraki, with me!" Kazuma yelled. "We need to make one last attack to take it out." Azaraki went with Kazuma high into the air, and started a whirlwind above the snake's head. The snake tried to dodge, but the wind descended upon the snake, making one clean cut, severing the head from the body. The body, now without the head, began to lash out. Kazuma and everyone ran, trying to stay out of range. They made it back to the SUV and took off away from the town, continuing in the direction they had been going before.
"I thought you killed it?! Why is it still moving? You did cut off it's head right?" Niyumi asked.
"They did, duh." Yamari replied. "It may be a demon, but it's still a snake. Cut off the head, the body still moves for a while, even though it's dead. Everyone knows that moron."
"Well I guess not everyone." Azaraki laughed.
"Shutup!" Niyumi said.
"But hey! We took one down!" Ren said.
"Don't celebrate yet, Ren." Kazuma said. "We still have a few dozen more to take out." That about killed everyone's mood. They were all quiet after that, thinking about how they would fair against an army of those demon snakes.
