Monday morning rolled around and I could barely stay awake. I'd been at Carl's all weekend and we hadn't slept much either days, so the idea of having to get up early and trek to school made me want to gag. I had 10 minutes to get ready before a familiar black jeep would pull up outside my house so I threw on a graphic tee and some shorts before tying up my hair.

*BEEP BEEP*

Carl pressed his car horn, indicating that he was here to pick me up. I slung my backpack over my shoulders and slipped my feet into a pair of air forces, rushing out of the door to reveal a boy holding a cup of coffee and a bag of chips. "You're an angel!" I exclaimed as we climbed into the car, taking my breakfast and balancing it on my knee. "Play whatever you want." He handed me his phone, which was already attached to the aux cord, and I smiled in return. "When did you become such a gentleman?" I joked, playing some old Tyler the Creator. Carl started the engine and began driving in the direction of the school, screaming the lyrics to Yonkers and She.

As we entered the parking lot, several pairs of eyes turned our way before going back to face their friends, giggling and whispering. A girl approached us once we'd exited the car and said "Hi, I'm from the school paper. Is it okay if we ask you a few questions?" eagerly, turning to a fresh page in her notebook. Me and Carl exchanged a quick glance before nodding, waiting for her first question.

"So, how does it feel to be the schools new power couple?" I chuckled to myself and Carl scratched the back of his head, not knowing what to say. "We're very flattered but at the moment, we're just friends." I replied as the girl started taking notes. "There seems to be a lot of chemistry between you two and we definitely saw it at the school dance last week. Could we be seeing you as anything more than friends soon?" She pushed, hoping to get an answer out of Carl. He just shrugged and looked over at me as I said "I don't know, everyone will just have to wait and see."

The girl nodded and closed her book. "Okay, thank you for your time!" She gave us a quick smile before disappearing into a crowd by the entrance of the school, leaving Carl and I to exchange another confused look. "That was so weird.." He muttered as we entered the building, making our way to first period. Students we weren't familiar with waved or said 'Hi' to us as they walked through the corridors, the sudden attention taking me by surprise. I had gone from being that lonely bitch who chilled with the lunch ladies to some popular prom queen that people wanted to know in the space of a weekend, which freaked me out slightly but Carl wrapped his arm around me, squeezing away the anxiety that grew in the pit of my stomach.

"I'll pick you up after first period so we can ditch second for a smoke break." He whispered, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and teasing me with them. I bit my lip and nodded before entering the classroom, allowing us to go our separate ways.

[during second period]

"People in this school are fucking weird.. Why do they wanna be friends with me all of a sudden?" I said through an exhale of smoke, resting my back against the brick wall. "It's because you're the 'queen', meaning people went out of their way to vote for you out of anyone else in the school. It shows that you're popular and people always wanna suck up to those kids." Carl replied, stamping out his cigarette and throwing it in a bush.

"Two-faced much?" I scoffed whilst rolling my eyes. Suddenly, I felt my arms being pinned against the wall as Carl leaned over me, our faces centimetres apart. "You don't need them when you've got me, Nessa." His breath tickled my skin and I chuckled, watching as his lips slowly edging closer to mine. My hands grabbed at his shirt as I pulled him towards me, closing the gap between us, starting one of our heated make out sessions. It lasted 10 minutes before we both heard a camera going off, making us stop and look in the direction of the sound. The school journalist from earlier was stood beside us, looking at a picture she'd just taken on her camera and smirking.

"Just friends, huh?" She chuckled, mocking what we'd said in the parking lot. My hands balled into fists as I stormed up to the her, trying to grab at her camera. "Delete that or I swear to God I'll smash it!" I growled but she dodged me and ran towards the entrance of the school. Carl snaked his arm around my shoulder and led me back to the wall, trying to calm me down. "Where were we?" He whispered and I smiled, leaning back in.
