4. You were positive
The first week after you had told me that, I noticed how your skin had become less tan and was growing paler each day. I noticed the bags under your eyes from restless nights of worrying and feeling awful. I noticed how your lips used to be full and plump, but were now chapped and faded.
You were still beautiful in my eyes, though. I overheard some of our peers whispering about your change of appearance. They said you looked bad.
I hoped that you knew I still thought you were the prettiest girl that I had ever seen.
We had graduated and you got through the ceremony fine, but the end of the night I had witnessed from afar you breaking the news to your friends. I watched them cry as you stood there, staring blankly at the ground. What were you feeling?
I decided to accompany you through this journey of yours, staying by your side whenever I could.
I had bought you flowers and brought them to your house. Your mother was there to greet me with swollen eyes and tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Lucy had to be hospitalized."
So, I went to the hospital you were at, and was given permission to visit you. I was a close friend, after all.
I entered the room quietly, seeing you staring blankly at the ceiling. Dried tears glistened on your cheeks and your eyes were also red from crying. Your skin was paler than I had last saw it two days ago.
"Lucy."
You rose from your bed slowly, smiling genuinely at me when you first laid your eyes on me. It made my stomach do one of those backflips again. Despite all this, I was still in love with you.
I walked over to you and handed you the flowers, smiling so big when I saw your happy reaction. I hadn't seen you smile in awhile, actually, but now I could.
Everyday after that, you told me you were going to remain more positive. I smiled when I heard your decision, deciding it would be the best option for any happiness right now.
I visited your hospital room everyday, listening to you talk about your favorite memories from your childhood - most of them were funny, and a lot of them made me feel happy at the thought of you being little and happy. And healthy.
I fell in love with you more each day.
I didn't want to, because I knew you'd be leaving soon. But I couldn't help falling in love with you.
I remember when you called me into your room and told me how you were losing positivity.
Four months had passed, and I noticed your hair was falling out. It didn't make you any less beautiful, but I will say I missed seeing your golden locks.
"I hate this," you had said many times, wanting to cry but seeing no tears form in your mocha eyes. Those eyes that were losing light.
"Can I tell you something?" I blurted out, finding confidence deep inside of me.
You nodded, breathing in and out to calm yourself down.
"I love you, Lucy."
I remember seeing your huge smile and your tearing up eyes - happy tears.
I remember you ushered me over to you, and that's when we kissed for the first time.
"I love you, too," you had said to me, kissing me again.
Your lips were chapped and faded, but I had never experienced something that made my heart swell so blissfully like that.
I loved you will all my heart, and knew the hardest part of this would be seeing you leave.
That's what it always is.
