I wake up a few hours later and see a little blue eyes princess. I smile.
"Hello, princess Ella," I say as I sit up and stretch. She smiles at me and jumps into my lap and hugs me. I hug her back and smile. "Hey. How would you like to go to town with me today?"
"Really?! Wait. Do you think that miss Selena would let us go after what happened yesterday? You could have died." She says and I sigh.
"I don't think I would have gotten hurt," I say and she nods.
"Ok. If she lets you I will come." She says and I nod.
"Ok. Let me get ready. I'll be down in a few minutes." I say and she runs downstairs and
I get up. I use the restroom, brush my teeth and then I get dressed. I walk downstairs and go to miss Selena's office. I am about to raise my hand to knock on the door, but I stop when I hear a woman's voice that I am unfamiliar with."Selena, I'm asking you as a friend. We need your help. He's not been out long, but it's been long enough to where he could strike at any moment. He'll come straight here and you know how he is with bystanders. He'll kill them, and it doesn't matter if they are children or not." The woman says.
"I don't think he will. One of my children had a run-in with him yesterday, and he got a couple scrapes and bruises, but that is it. If he knows the boy is here he may not attack. He spared him, but there is more the boy is not telling me. Maybe you could help me with that." I hear miss Selena respond.
"You mean at the bank? One of your kids was there?" The strange voice says.
"Yes. One of the older ones, Kendrick. He was brought home by commissioner Gorden." Miss Selena says.
"I see. Where is this boy? I want to speak to him." The strange lady says.
"He should be getting up anytime soon. He normally doesn't sleep too late." She says and I take that as my cue. I knock on the door as my curiosity gets the best of me.
"Come in." Miss Selena says and I walk in. "Kendrick, good morning!"
"Good morning, Miss Selena," I say and this red-headed woman looks at me. I freeze. Something about her makes the hairs on my arm stand straight on end.
"Kendrick," Miss Selena says snapping me back into reality. I look at her. "This is my good friend Pamela Lillian Isley. She is an old associate of mine."
"Hello, Miss Isley," I say.
"Hello, Kendrick. Selena was telling me that you had a run-in with the joker yesterday." She says and I nod.
"Yes, ma'am. I did." I say and she nods.
"Tell me what happened." She says.
"I don't think I'm allowed to talk about it. I only told Miss Selena, because she is my guardian. I don't think the commissioner would want me giving details out to people." I say and she looks at Miss Selena.
"Can you at least tell her what you told me, please?" Miss Selena asks and I sigh. I tell Miss Isley what I had told Miss Selena and she keeps a blank face until I tell her that I fought off the Joker. I felt kind of bad for lying, but I couldn't tell them the truth.
"Wow. You went toe to toe with joker and one of his goons? I'm impressed, kid." She says and I stare at her. "What?"
"Who are you. Really? You don't seem just like a botanist. There is something more sinister in your eyes, and also a hint of fear. Especially when I mention the Joker." I say and she stops then looks at Miss Selena.
"He has a master's in psychology. He probably understands you better than you do."Miss Selena says. Miss Isley then nods and looks back at me.
"Let's just say I am someone who has had a run-in or two with the Joker. Be careful kid. Now that you fought him, you're pegged. Don't go anywhere by yourself, and always watch your back." Miss Haley says and I nod.
"Ok," I say. She stares at me for a moment.
"What did you say your last name was?" Miss Islet asks. I look at her.
"I don't know. My mother abandoned me." I say with a straight face and she nods.
"Right. I forgot." She says.
"Sure you did. Just like you 'forgot' to answer my question." I say as I stare at her, as I cross my arms over my chest. She ponders for a moment. Thinking about the question. This gives me time to think about my next move.
"You never asked me a question that I didn't answer." She and I keep a blank face as she looks at me. I notice that she becomes uncomfortable under my gaze. I decide to keep my icy glare to make her more uncomfortable.
"Yes, I did," I say and she shifts under my gaze.
"What was it then?" She challenges. Oh, this is gonna be fun.
"Who are you, really?" I say. She looks at me confused.
"I answered that question." She says and I can tell she is getting irritated.
"No. You avoided the question." You gave me s response that was a warning. You never gave me a straight answer." I say and watch the agitation grow.
"You have no idea who I am. Or what I can do." She says.
'Ooooo. I found a button. I like pushing buttons.' I think to myself and I allow a small smirk to appear.
"Then answer the question," I say and she glares at me.
"I don't have to." She says.
"Why not? You hiding something?" I ask and a look of panic flies across her face. Only to leave seconds later. I would have missed it. If it wasn't what I was expecting.
"No." She says shortly.
"Then answer the question," I say with a voice as smooth as silk, but there is a silent threat hidden in it. She catches the threat and it flips something in her head.
"Don't challenge me, boy!" She growls and I feel this rush. I know I shouldn't but I can't help it.
"Or what?" I challenge and I see Miss Selena stand quickly and she comes in between the two of us.
"Kendrick, stop." She says as she pushes on my chest gently to move me back a little. I hadn't noticed how close to each other's faces Miss Isley and I got. I let her move me back a bit. Miss Selena looks at Miss Isley.
"Pamela, please calm down." She says and Pamela looks at her.
"It's a wonder Joker let him live. He knows how to find your sensitive areas and capitalize on them." Miss Isley says and I smirk.
"Maybe that's why I'm still alive." I turn and leave them both questioning. I go and find Ella and we leave. She asked me if Miss Selena said we could leave. I lied and told her 'Yes'.
We get into the city and she holds onto my hand tightly as we walk past the bank. She looks up at me with fear in her eyes.
"Is the scary Joker man in there?" She says and I look at her then smile. I kneel to her level.
"No, Ella. The Joker is probably very far away from here by now." I say and she gently runs her little fingers over the bruising under my eye where Joker hit me.
"I wouldn't say that, boy." I quickly stand and look. There is a huge man standing there and I push Ella behind me.
"What do you wa-" I am cut off when his fist hits me in the face and I feel my head snap back. I fall to the ground as my vision goes black. Then I hear Ella shriek and scream my name.
Then darkness.
