My schedule in the morning is the same as everyone else's in the morning. I get up, brush my teeth, wash my face, get dressed, and I go and wait for the bus.
I leave my house at 6:20am. It's still dark out and I can't see all the way down the street but I make my way to the bus stop. I get there and there's already a few other kids there.
Micheal is the neighborhood dope head. He'll sell himself and anything he owns to get some. This makes him a natural psycho.
Standing with Micheal is the neighborhood friendly drug dealer.
Quan.
Quan is the kinda person that would shoot his brother in the back if things didn't go his way. And he did it too. He went to jail for a year and came back because they couldn't prove that he'd done it on purpose.
Damn. The police either don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's happening in the hood.
I go and stand by Nico. He's just arriving and we stand together in silence as we wait for the bus.
The bus picks us up and drops us off at Compton high as usual.
We eat breakfast in the cafeteria and Nico breaks the silence.
"Fuck man! Quan and his crew won't stop looking over here!" He says this with irritation.
"I know man just don't look back you might make him come over here." I reply.
Quan isn't someone you want to get involved with. He'll make you feel special as the new guy in his gang but the second you drop your guard you'll end up in a dark alley for a week before you get discovered by the police.
"Aw shit dude he's pointing at us...dude let's bail he's coming over here..." Nico is panicking. This can't be good.
We stand to go and that's when things went from zero to a hundred REAL quick.
"Where the fuck y'all niggas going?" Quan says as he approaches us.
"Look man we don't won't no trouble." I say still not making eye contact.
"Looks like trouble wants you fuck boy. I got a job for you two light weights. You up for it?" He looks down on us with an evil glint.
"Hell no we not 'up for it'" Nico says with air quotes.
He's making it clear by his tone of voice that he's not interested in this conversation. I know he hates Quan but he'd better keep his cool or he could get us jumped or worse.
Quan turns and smiles at one of his lackeys and asks him. "Was I asking Jim?"
"Nah I don't think so Quan" said the groupie.
"That's right I wasn't asking. Now you gone handle this b'ness and you gone do it on time. If I get any complaints that's both of your asses." He says turning back to us. He's turned a more serious attitude on. Much more...business like.
"And what if I told you what I thought you could do with your bull shit ass threats? What you gonna do then?" Nico boldly challenges Quan.
Quan laughs and then lifts his shirt to expose the handle of a gun in his pants.
"Well...you know how I get down." He said readjusting his shirt.
Nico tensed. I wasn't looking at him but he tensed up so much I actually felt it. His dad was killed by a gun. He was horribly afraid of them.
"I see I got your attention now. Good. I got a package comin in tonight. My guy is busy...swimming...if you know what I mean. Your job is to take this package to LD down in the CT." He said again in his business tone of voice.
I didn't know who LD was but I knew CT stood for Cholo Town. It wasn't a race thing. That place got its name because of the gang that runs it. They call themselves the Cholos because they're Spanish.
"You'll get the package from me tomorrow night at 11. Don't be late... Shit you already know what happened to the last guy that fucked up." Quan laughed and walked away with his groupies following along.
Our day was pretty much normal. It went by fast enough but Nico and I hardly noticed. We were both thinking about what Quan had said.
Was he serious? Should we get help? What would happen if someone found out we snitched? Would we survive the next week? What if something goes wrong with the job? Man we are so unbelievably screwed!
