The One

I woke up upside down, tied to a rod. Where was I? Memories came back in pieces. Cameron's scream, Cameron laying on the ground, my neck bleeding, a man. A native man.

I looked around. The first thing I saw was a fire. I stared at two women with fancy headdresses. I looked closer and only then did I realize one was a man. Oops.

The man walked over to me until he stood above me and glowered down at me. I stared into his rock solid eyes. "Bregailwa." He seemed to be speaking to me.

I smiled and said, "I can't understand you." No doubt he couldn't understand me either.

"Hello, Samantha," he said in perfect english. I looked at him, truly stunned. Where had he learned my name?

He took a dagger out of its sheath on his hip and I thought he would bring it down on my chest but instead he slashed the ropes on which I hung.

I fell and hit the hard ground with a loud UMPH. He handed me the dagger. What?

"I have had a vision that you would come. You are the one."

What the hell? "Ah, look. I came here because of the storm. On a raft. I'm not 'the one,' okay?"

He shook his head. "You," he gestured to me, "are the one."

"Okay, well," I got up off of my elbows. "What does this 'one' have to do? I mean, I'm just trying to find my friend."

"Ah, the vision said you would say that." This was getting creepy. "Your friend. Cameron, is his name Cameron?"

"Haha, okay Cameron, come out here. It isn't funny."

"It is not meant to be funny."

I gulped. "Look, I'm just trying to keep the others alive."

One of the people in hula skirts said something. "What did he just say?"

"He can understand us. He is telling the others what you are saying." He gestured to a tent. "These 'others,' are they possibly smaller? Younger? Seven of them?" I nodded. "Let us speak more of this over some food." My stomached rumbled at the though of food and then I thought of the others. They were somewhere, on a beach, alone, without food.

I sighed. "Sorry, I can't stay." I turned to leave and walked off and the guards formed a circle around the camp, casing me in. I sighed again. "Fine, we'll do it your way. On one condition." He nodded. "The others come too."

He frowned at this deal. "We cannot allow this."

"Fine. I'm outa here."

"No, no! They can..." he mumbled something in return.

"They can what?"

"They can come!"

"No harm to them?"

"No harm to them."
