Chapter Three: Caleb
Lucy came into the kitchen looking scared and lost. I thrust a bagel and an apple into her hands. “Let’s go.” I said. We climbed into Dad’s old truck and I backed out of the driveway. I looked across at Lucy, she was clutching her bag in her lap, and I could tell she was trying to be brave. I had always tried so hard to protect my little sister, and now her life was in danger. The drive to the airport was silent. I sipped my cup of coffee while Lucy picked at her nails, the bagel and apple lay untouched. When we reached the airport, I pulled out two backpacks and handed one to Lucy. It was a dark brown and inconspicuous. “Open it.” I said. She unzipped the bag and looked inside. I had packed her laptop the night before, Dad and I had thought something like this would happen and we would have to flee. Inside were also two knives, and a short dagger. She looked up at me in awe.
First of all, thanks for bringing my laptop, but second, why did you pack knives? They’re going to find them you know.
I was grateful that Lucy said that between us. If my sister was anything, she was smart.
They won’t know. You’ll see. I replied.
Let me guess, another thing that you will explain later.

We made our way through the airport, and turned in our tickets for our flight which thankfully, was on time. I had been worried that our flight would be cancelled or late, and they would find us. Because honestly, when your father gets kidnapped, and you have an extremely powerful sister with you, the first place anyone would think of would be the airport. We reached our seats and stowed our bags in the overhead compartment. I chose not to have our duffle bags stored with the luggage in case they got lost or if Lucy and I had to make a quick getaway. I sat down, and immediately, Lucy tugged on my arm.
Explain. She said. I nodded, and she settled down in her seat ready to hear what I had to say.
