"Ladybug?"
"Go away!"
"C'mon baby girl, please open this door. You're scaring me"
"Go away! I don't wanna talk to you, Lisa!"
"Lauren..."
"Go AWAY!"
I sighed, my head resting against the hard surface of the wooden door with a bang.
"Is that what you really want?" My voice was softer this time, almost a whisper full of defeat. It was silent for a couple of seconds.
"... Yes" I sighed again, my heart breaking in tiny little pieces by the broken tone on the childish voice. I rested the palm of my hand against the door for a long moment, willing it to open. But it didn't.
"... Okay then. I'll go. Just... Promise me you'll open it once I'm gone so Chrissy will stop worrying okay? And... Please behave, alright? And, most important of all, never forget that, no matter what, no matter how far away I am, I will always love you and you will always be my number one. And if you ever do want to talk to me, all you have to do is call me and if you ever need me here, I'll come as soon as I can, you hear me?" Silence. I blinked against the tears filling my burning eyes, starting to push my body away from the cold door. "... I love you bug. I'll see you on Christmas"
I turned away, wiping away the tears that I had failed to hold in and slowly made my way downstairs. Only five people were in there, all the rest had already said me their goodbyes and most of them had cried with me. I was all ready to go, all my bags inside Nathan's car and my whole future all right in front of me. My mom no longer had tears to cry and my dad still had the same proud but sad smile on his face. The cupcakes Kath had cooked us were already on Nathan's arms and both my older sister's smiled sadly once they saw my defeated face.
"She didn't open?" Katherine asked in her motherly, kind voice and I slowly shook my head, eyes downcast and not trusting my own voice. I had reached the bottom step by now, so my mom put a caring arm around my shoulder in a side-hug.
"Don't worry honey. We all know how much that kid loves you and that she's only really sad right now. I bet she will even been the first call you will get once you get in there, you know?" My caring mother tried to console me, knowing more than no one how not being able to hug my sweet little me one last time before I go away was hurting me inside.
"Yeah, doll, don't worry this little head of yours too much" My dad smiled kindly to me and I smiled sadly back. I took a deep breath and kissed my mom's cheek.
"We have to go now, right Nate?" I looked at my boyfriend, who nodded.
"Yeah, let's go. Mr. and Mrs. Cimorelli, once again, thank you so much for all your help" Nathan said while hugging my mother with his free arm. My mom patted his back.
