The rest of the day proves to be interesting but confusing. The sub, Mr. Harley, mostly avoids eye contact, but when he does look at me, I see something in his eyes that I don't quite know what it is.

"Mrs. Johnson wanted me to lecture you about the civil war-" he was cut off by a groan from the whole class. He grinned. "However, I'm sure you've already heard about it a million times. So I'm going to talk to you about something else. History isn't just about wars and countries. There is some history that no one teaches about, because it is said to be untrue. But mythology is actually an important part of history. I think that everyone needed something to blame, but something they could follow orders from and devote their lives to. So there were gods; monsters; Titans." He seemed to pause and I swear his deep brown eyes were staring at me. "Vampires."

Everyone seemed enticed. Even Amber seemed interested at that point, and that was saying something.

"Vampires: bloodsucking creatures of the night. Or so everyone thinks. There are many stories that make up vampires. Some say that they are deadly, monstrous beings who kill for pleasure. There is also a rumor that there is a certain object that can conceal the powers of the bloodlust and repel most aspects of the vampires. I want you guys to decide what is real and what is fake. I want you guys to complete a three page report by next Monday on one of the mythological creatures I just named. Do research. What kind of history on the creatures do you find? Write down all of your information in essay form please." He talks more about each of the creatures and their history for a while, then hands out a sheet about a whole bunch of myths and legends to get us started.

"Wow," Amber whispered, "this is so stupid. I mean, why would we need to learn about something that's not even real?"

"It's better than the civil war," I whisper back.

"True. Maybe I'll actually do this assignment."

"No, you probably won't. And he probably won't even be here next Monday." I mean, Mrs. Johnson can't be that sick. Right?

"Ms. Heart, you can't possibly be done already."

I jump when I hear him talk. I didn't even hear him come up behind me.

"No, sir," I say, glaring slightly at the use of my last name. It's so lame and simple and I hate it.

"Well then I expect you to be working." He says to me before walking angrily towards a student who asked if he could do his paper on werewolves. When his back is turned I flip him off before turning on my computer.

"Wow," Amber says, "How are you always so confident when you talk to people? Especially a guy like that." She Grins and wiggles her eyebrows.

"There will be no reports on werewolves!" I hear Mr. Harley yell.

I snort. "He's hardly intimidating. Did you notice he didn't even say a word to you? I don't like him. He's probably some slut guy who gives special favors to his students. I mean, seriously. No actual teacher would teach about vampires and such." Amber's face goes pale and I look at her questioningly, but then she smiles and says, "Hi, Mr. Harley."

I turn around and freeze when I see him standing behind me.

"Whoops."

            ************************

"Yes, Dad, detention. All week. Dad, I'll tell you about it later when I get home. Love you too. Bye Dad." I hang up my cell and glance down at my watch. 2:30. Ugh. I gotta sit here for 30 more minutes before detention starts. I pull out my favorite book, The Midnighters, and start reading it from the beginning. However, I only get to the part where Jessica helps Rex find his glasses when my mind starts to wander. How could I get detention? Especially for the whole week. I barely even did anything. Maybe he is a teacher who does special favors... I shudder at the thought. He is attractive, but he's a teacher and too old for me. Plus, he's a bitch.

"Ms. Heart." I look up to see Mr.  Harley standing at the doors. I quickly glance at the clock. Only 2:47. He's early.

"Mr. Harley," I say with a fake smile.

"Follow me."

He spins around and starts walking. I follow. We walk out of the cafeteria and towards his classroom. I drag my fingers across the wall as I follow, trying to make the time drag with them. Honestly, I don't even care how long the walk takes, I just don't want to be in a room alone with him.

So imagine my surprise when it actually works. Room 105; 106; 107; 1... 0... 8... I'm walking the same speed, and yet I'm going slower. Suddenly my hand is smacked away from the wall.

"Hey!" I cry. Mr. Harley is standing in front of me. I didn't even notice him.

"Don't do that," he snaps, before continuing to walk. I rush to catch up to him, confused. What did he mean, 'stop doing that'? I wasn't actually doing anything; it was just my imagination.

"I could have you reported for that!" I tell him. He just snorts. I become angry. "I'm serious! In fact, I think I'll go to the principal right now."

"You will do no such thing," he replies casually as we enter his classroom.

"Watch me," I say defiantly. I turn around to go, but my legs suddenly feel like Jell-O, and I can't make them move towards the principal's office. This makes me frustrated and I force myself to move. I get one leg forward and fight off nausea, but once it passes, walking is easier. Instead of continuing, however, I turn around. Mr. Harley is standing next to his desk, watching me with slight amusement and a hint of what looks like respect.

"Have a seat," he tells me. I automatically sit in the closest chair to me.

"What the fuck did you do to me?" I demand. Any respect I had for him before was gone. He must have drugged me or something. Although I have no idea what kind of drug would make me highly obedient, or how he would have gotten it to me. Instead of answering, he sits in the chair at his desk.

"I would like you to use your laptop to start researching about your essay. Since you didn't seem so eager to choose what you wanted to write about, I will choose for you. You will write me a report on Greek gods. Get started," he says, watching me intently. I growl slightly under my breath, but do as he says. Not like I have much of a choice.

So for the next hour and a half, I research and write down everything that I can about Greek gods. My phone constantly vibrates in my pocket with what I know are texts from Amber, but I can't exactly find the time to answer, what with Mr. Harley watching me so intensely. I don't think I saw him blink at all. It was very unnerving. Finally, it was 4:30. I started to pack up my stuff and leave.

"Goodbye, Ms. Heart," he called as I went out the door.

"See you tomorrow, then," I say back to him.

"Oh, that won't be necessary," he says quietly. I almost don't hear him. I turn around and give him a weird look but he just grins and waves. I roll my eyes and turn around, walking through the halls towards sweet freedom.
