A young blond girl who went by the name of Tris Prior was walking down the main corridor with her friend Christina. There had just been a death; an initiate had jumped into the chasm!

"Albert, aged sixteen, has died. Jumping into the chasm isn't a very easy thing to do, and his death was an act of bravery. He is true Dauntless, even if he is in a long sleep that will never end. Albert is the bravest initiate we've had here. Let's all take a moment to remember Albert, a Dauntless hero!" announced a speaker.

People took turns to peer down the chasm and remember the "brave" Albert. Tris didn't dare look down. Guilt was flowing inside her. Al was a friend. She made him an enemy. Also, how could this death be brave? It was foolish, and all her fault. Are Dauntless trying to make everyone jump down into the chasm, so that when they die they will be known as brave?

Besides the debate in her mind, Tris just couldn't get over one of her close friend's death. However foolish or brave it was, it was still a loss- one Tris needed the strength to overcome. Only a true Dauntless can overcome...
