My brother walks me to the front desk of my new high school. The halls are filled we people. I feel like I have been swimming through bodies, when we reach the "domain of the secretary", her words not mine. The principle had personally e-mailed my brother my schedule, so we didn't have to figure that out. She asks me about my age and my former school. Kayden answers them swiftly, while Mrs. O'Neil a.k.a. the secretary lady, again her words not mine, tries to goat me in answering the questions. I smile politely to her while she talks to me, but I simply cannot answer her. I fill out the forms she passes to me. My brother signs them and we're done. Mrs. O'Neil comes from behind her desks and tries to grab my hand to lead me to my first class. In reflex I jump behind Kayden. I hear him curse under his breath and draws me into a hug. "It's alright, little sis." He whispers in my ear. "I'm sorry." I reply. He picks me up and literally drops me on the ground. I laugh soundlessly.
When we were little, I didn't want to go to my school, so I could go with Kayden to his school. I climbed on top of him like a monkey and he dropped me (safely of course) on the ground, before going away. It became a tradition that Kayden drops me at school, instead of dropping me off at school.
I give my big brother a quick hug. "Bye, Brother bear" "Have a nice day, Lyss" Kayden smiles again, when he walks away.
When I turn back to Mrs. O'Neil, I see understanding written across her face. "You cannot talk, can you dear?" I smile sadly at her. "I'm so sorry" Motherly, she tries to embrace me in a hug. I quickly take a couple of steps back. Mrs. O'Neil looks at my face. "I'm truly sorry.", she says softly with a saddening tone. "Come, I will lead the way to your first period." She starts walking and purposely keeps a distance between us. When we walk to the classroom, we take a detour so Mrs. O'Neil can point out my locker to me. She opens the door to AP Mathematics. The teacher falls silent and takes note of me. "You must be the new student." I shake his hand and nod. He frowns a bit at my lack of verbal response, but gives me my books anyway. Mrs. O'Neil walks up to the teacher and whispers something in his ear. Probably telling him that I'm mute. I see him glance in my direction while I take an empty spot in the front of the class. "Alright class we will continue with this problem: If the ellipse px^2 + qy^2 = 60 goes through the coordinates A(2, 2 x 3^1/2) and B(4, 3^1/2), then what is the equitation of the ellipse?" He continues his lessons and with a glance to some of the teenagers in the back, he teaches to a silent room.
Unfortunately my AP English teacher is not the type of teacher I like. I walked to her desk at the beginning of the class. I had my notepad and pencil ready. She was engrossed in her smartphone. When it seemed she wasn't going to notice me by herself. I softly tapped on her desk. "What?", she snaps at me. I take a step back. I give her a note saying that I'm the new student. "How is that my problem?", she says angrily. "Could you hand me the books required for this class, please?" I write on my notepad before handing it to the teacher. She almost throws them to me. "Are you too hoarse from partying to talk?", she says with a sneer. "I am sorry to inform you, miss, but I am mute." I hand her the notepad again and she looks taken aback when she reads the note. I pick a spot in the front again to get through class. The class is mostly read the textbook and write an essay.
When the bell rings I've survived another hour without any social interaction with one of the other students. My next hour is free period. Mrs. O'Neil helped me with reserving a music room and I start to make my way there. I've almost reached my destination when I hear someone yell behind me. "Hey, new girl, wait!" Someone jogs towards me. "You were also in Mr. Smithers AP mathematics class, right?" I nod. "Did you understand what he was doing? Don't worry if you don't, because nobody does. So every week we have a study group. Because the nerds want to have their amazing grades and the jocks need to pass the exams to stay on the team. So I thought let's invite the new girl. Are you coming to the study group? We all have free period at the same time thanks to the secretary lady. It is this way." The guy didn't breath through his speech. I didn't even had the chance to respond to any of his question. When he starts walking to that study group, I don't follow him. He looks behind him to see me still standing in the same spot. "What are you waiting for? Let's go!" I shake my head. "Why not? You cannot tell me you understand Smithers?" I shrug and start walking to the music rooms once again. The guy comes jogging to me again. "You. Understand. Smithers?" He says it slowly, emphasizing every word. I nod. "Holy shit! You're a genius!" He gains the attention from the students in the hall. One of them I recognize. It's the cheerleader from yesterday. "Raph, babe, what are you doing with that slut?", she asks while she puts her arms around him. "Who are you talking about?", 'Raph' asks confused. "Come on, babe, that's the slut from the sport field." She glares at me. Her friends, who were listening to the conversation, closes me in. "How dare you talk to the quarterback, bitch! He's already taken.' I feel myself being pushed on the ground. "Your trick yesterday was pathetic" The words accompanied by a slap. I look up to 'Ralph' for help, but he's making out with his girlfriend. "Don't you have something to say for yourself, slut?" I try to get up, but they won't let me. One of the other cheerleaders pours her drink over me. "Are you mute or something?", Another jock asks. I grab my bag and wiggle myself out of the group after receiving some more pinches, kicks and slaps to finally escape into the music room. I close the door and rest with my back against the wall. My first day at school and it has not even been lunchbreak. This year is going to be amazing. Sigh.
