*Flash Back*

It was cold in my house. I wore a big fluffy jacket with a fur covered hood.

"Midnight. Darling, come to aunty Carol." My big heavy set aunt glided over the frozen floor. Her red cloak flowed in river a velvet behind her. "Go outside, you might warm up." She laced her pale hand on my shoulder.

I gazed up into her dark eyes. I never looked a thing like her. For one she had blonde bouncing hair and dull brown eyes. I had flat black hair and bright blue eyes.

"No, the heat might come on. And if I'm outside I'll miss it and be cold." I turned my age toward the old rusted vent.

Carols small hand tightened around my shoulder. "You are 10 years old," her voice was a mere whisper but every word dripped with venom. "Ten year old girls go out and play. You however sit in front of a heater that hasn't worked since this god for saken town lost the sun. We will never have heat like the people above us. We are forever to live in the cold and dark."

Rolling my eyes, "you always bring that up! If i got outside, everyone will pick on me! They always do!" I jumped up knocking her hand out of the way.

"That's why I found you a friend. Joseph, come here dear!" As my aunt spoke these words a boy a few years older then me walked in through our brass door.

"Who is this?" I asked with anger in my voice.

The boy had green shoulder length hair, hazel eyes, and pale skin that made him look ghostly. "My name is Joseph. And you are..." he held out his hand in a friendly gesture.

"My name is not important. I want you to leave. Now." I pushed by Joseph brushing my shoulder against his.

"I believe it is." He swung around grabbing me by my arm and holding me to his chest.

As i looked up at him I realised he was very tall. "Let go of me you ignorant fool. I will hurt you if you do not let me go." I warned him making him chuckle. "I am serious." I insisted only making him laugh more. "Shut up!" I howled.

He stuck his tongue out at me and said, "make me." His tongue was forked down the middle giving him a lizard kind of look.

"Go away!" I pushed on his chest as hard as I could.

Than it hit me. The pounding started first behind my left eye then migrated towards the center of my head. My head rocked back and forth as darkness descended down on me.

All sounds echoed in my small head. The sound of Joseph asking what's wrong hurt more than ever.

Without warning I was over took with bliss.

I looked down at the beautiful girl in my arms. Her eyes drifted close and her body fell limp.

"Hello? Hey! Miss Carol!" I screamed. The girl winced in pain. "Carol!" I growled.

The big women came rushing into the room. "What happen?" She asked puzzled.

"I...I don't know!" I glanced down at her small figure. "Help her, please."

Carols voice was low. "She finally can see. wonder who she's seeing."

I laid the girl down and stood up. "What?" I was a good 10 inches taller than Carol.

"Huh? Oh, well you see her mother could see when someone died before it happens. But the thing is that person could die anytime. Some people died naturally, others by murder, very few by suicide. This gift was passed down to dear Midnight here." She waved her hand towards the girl. "See, she sees when someone dies, this is the first time this has happened. Wonder who's going to die." She chuckled low and dark.

"Oh." My eyes wondered to Midnight.

"She might be unconscious for a while. Whats a few minutes in her mind is hours in the real time." And with that Carol picked Midnight up and walked away.

I awoke to my normal room. Fear made my body shake. "I need to leave here. This place is no good." With those words I vowed I would escape this society. One way or another.
