I sit in silence, which is golden if you haven't heard. I'm not much much of gold person but precious metals can't be more precious than time. Especially my time, it's limited. I look at my wrist and see the numbers again. I have four days until I meet him, huh. The digits on my wrist display the exact date I'll meet my supposed "soul mate", if I even live that long. Like I said before, my time is limited. They want me dead because I'm different, because I'm dangerous. It wasn't until last week I learned this, as I sat at my dinner table and grabbed a metal spoon. Rooky mistake.
I look at my hands, horrified. On normal circumstances, like if I was actually thirty years old, I'd be out of my skin excited. But this is different. They took Liam, they took my mom and dad. Oh Liam. I tuck my hands under my arms as I sit crouched in the corner of my windowless room. After that day they took me and placed me in this room, I don't remember much. They send meals when I sleep. I don't get many meals. I was given a change of clothes, which is a grey shirt and white pants. They didn't take my bracelet like they did my clothes, I didn't give them a chance. Its the only thing that reminds me that my life before this room wasn't some illusion I concurred to escape for a while.
I missed my birthday, according to the clock on the wall at least. Its one of the only comforts they allow me. I think its some kind of cruel joke. My sixteenth birthday was yesterday, I would have had gotten to experience one of the few pleasures of being one year older. I would have gotten to taken the placement test to see my job in the military, if I even joined it.
I closed my eyes for a couple of minutes and heard someone open a door I never knew was there. I open my eyes and jumped to my feet ready to run when two pairs of strong hands grab my arms. I struggle for a few seconds and finally elbow one of the guards in the stomach and hear a grunt, but they don't relent. I should have known the armor was too thick.
"Shh."
I whipped my head to face in front of me to see a man in a lab coat with a tie holding a needle filled with green liquid. I know what's in there. I also know its no use to struggle, they're going to knock me out. But, still, my humanly instincts kick in and I jerk even harder. The guards force me to my knees and hold my head down as the needle injects into my neck. I slowly fall to the ground as the world around me blurs and fades.
---------.....----------
"She's awake."
"Good, they've been waiting for four days to get us all together."
I open my eyes to stare at the overhead lights and the greet the tsunami of a headache. It all rushes to me and I sit up feeling nauseous. I grab a tin trash can from my bedside and lean over, hugging it to my chest. I begin to dry heave and I feel a soft hand on my back rubbing in peaceful circles.
The hand stays there until I'm done and I look behind me to see a girl about the age of thirteen with shoulder length blonde hair and brown eyes. She holds out a glass of water and a couple of pills. I hesitantly and shakily reach out and receive them both, taking my time swallowing so I won't throw it up. I look back at her when I'm done and she gives me a warm smile.
"You done over there?" I hear a male voice call.
I look over in from of my bed. I seem to be in some kind of hospital room, a curtain separates me and the girl from the boy and I see she too has a bed beside mine.
"All good." She calls, and boy at the age of about seventeen walks around wearing the same clothes I was given when I got here.
My clothes.
I frantically look down, praying I'm not in a hospital gown. My prayer were answered, I still wore the same clothes and my bracelet was still on my wrist.
"Whoa there sparky, I'm Grayson, I don't think we've met." He walks over and takes my hand. I see a hint of hesitation as he reaches out, but he still does and plants a kiss on top of my hand.
"Um," I force out, my throat is so hoarse and dry, its also sore, as if I spent an hour screaming in a silent room.
"Shhh, don't speak, drink this." I turn back to the girl, who hands me a new glass of water, which I graciously take and gulp down. When I'm done she takes it from me and re fills it, which I then again drink. "My names Summer, you're Charlie. That's what you're chart on the bed said, before the lady took it."
I open my mouth to respond, but she gives me a disapproving look and I slowly lower it and drink the next glass of water, only half finishing that one before putting it down on the bedside table. I put my hands on the mattress and pressed down, getting ready to get up. I stood shaking and stumbled forward, Grayson catching me in my attempt.
"Whoa there, sparky. Don't get any crazy ideas." He chided, helping me sit back down on the bed. I looked into his hazel eyes and he winked. If I was back in my old life he would have been undeniably attractive, but I'm not. I'm in a government facility locked up with two other teens in a hospital room.
"Sparky?" I croak.
"You're sheet it said your diagnosis is electricity. I think it suits you." I frown at the mention of my powers. And he gives me a meaningful look. "Don't like it?"
I shake my head no. "Too bad, cause 'shocky' doesn't have the same ring to it" he grabs my hand and helps me stand, my head swimming, but not nearly as bad as before. I take a few steps around my bed before I have to grab Grayson again. I hear footsteps outside our door and a few muffled voices. Suddenly the door opens and a lady in a lab coat enters.
"They're ready for you, the meeting's already begun." Her face is emotionless and stays that way as six guards enter the room and escort us out into the empty halls.
