"Wayne get down here now!" I scream upstairs our two story town house. There on the top of the stairs is my 14 year old son who looks just like his dad. I mean really with the blonde hair and green eyes it is simply uncanny. At the bottom of the stairs however is a vase that just so happens to be shattered and next to that vase is none other than a hockey puck.
"What mom?"
"Do you see this shattered vase."
"Yes," he says in a slightly frightned tone.
"Do you see this hockey puck?"
"Yes."
"Now who does this hockey puck belong to?"
"Me."
"Uggh come down here c'mon." I say in a more lucid tone.
He walks down slowly. I sit on the bottom stair and so does he. I put my arm around him and say,
"Now Wayne how many times have I told you not to play hockey in the house?"
"Alot."
"So why don't you listen?"
"Cause I need to work on aiming. "
"So you use my vase as a target?"
"I'm really sorry mom."
I smile and ruffle his hair and say,
"It's okay just clean this mess up and please don't do it again."
"Okay."
He starts cleaning and now I have to yell up the stairs again to talk to my 14 year old daughter Dorothy about her skating practice. My daughter has the same talent I did when I was her age, but now she wants to quit so I need to have a little talk with her. I've always wanted what's best for my children when Mike and I signed them up for our sports when they were little we told them at any time you don't want to do it tell us we'll understand. All I want to do is understand why she's quitting becusase right now she's ranked number one and I don't get why she would want to throw all that away.
"Dororthy!"
Dororthy comes skipping down the balcony and ends at the top of the stairs.
"Yes, mom."
"Can you come down here I want to have a little chat with you?"
"Sure."
She comes down with her brown curls bouncing all the way watching out for her brother of course. She looks a lot like me. When I compared a photo when I was young to the photo when she was the same age We looked exactly the same. I lead her over to our dining room table and sit beside her.
"Now Dororthy."
"Yes."
"Why do you want to quit ice skating."
"Oh well I well...."
"Is something happening at ice skating practice."
"No its not that its just I feel like I can't get any better."
"Why do you say that?"
"Beacuse I've been working on my new routine for a very long time and I can't seem to get it."
"Well sweetheart those moves aren't meant for you. They were meant for older girls."
"I know but most girls haven't been state champion since they were ten."
"I see your point ,but if you quit now you may never know what you can accomplish."
"I guess you're right." she lowers her head a little.
